Hey all
Never been here before but found this as i was a fan of the original when i was growing up and now live in japan where some of the stars still pop up regularly on tv.
but the big news is that a new version is being made and scheduled to be shown next year under its original name of saiyuuki
It has a couple of big japan stars attached....
including Shingo Katori from the band SMAP.
you might already know but if you didnt it something to look out for from fuji tv.

Is it a re-make of the original series or is it a new series with new episodes? If they intend to use the story lines from the original series then it is going to be a disaster. Like a lot of people said it will NEVER be as good as the original.
However it would be good if they make a completely new series where Tripitaka and his disciples complete their journey to India, fetch the scriptures and return to China.

Hey guys,
The Monkey remake is starting tomorrow night (9/1) here in Japan, I`ve so been looking forward to it! It`ll be on Monday nights weekly.
CloudStrife - January 11, 2006 11:25 AM (GMT)
I like the banner thing on that Monkey site.
Too bad I can't understand any of it, though.
:(
And that 'New Monkey CM' link didn't work for me.

just sitting in japan watchin the new monkey. surprised to see a programme last week with clips of serieses and movies of monkey going back a long time. you see what we know as an original was already a copy.... isnt it always the way.
it did seem to start at the beginning again (my japanese is very limited) but shingo is doing a fine job.
not sure about the others...
let me know if you get it in britain.
Funky_monkey - January 24, 2006 10:04 AM (GMT)
i'm not happy with the blonde monkey and now tripi looks way too girly, i dont think pigsy should have black hair but hay thats just me.
Magic Monkey - January 25, 2006 12:47 AM (GMT)
Well the Japanese have got a few things mixed up. Buddha was a man, Gunyin the Goddess of Compassion is a woman. However in the series Buddha was a women and Gunyin was a man. So go figure.
King of Ages - January 25, 2006 05:02 PM (GMT)
By the looks of the pic the new one is quite.......umm.........weird. Mind you the original series was a bit weird aswell. I assume it's only in Japanese. Anyone know if it will be getting a dub over version in Engilsh and whether it will come out in Australia?

Yap, that's what they did. On episode one, all four of them are already traveling together. Joining of Monkey is shown is short flashback. I've seen up to episode three, but not much about their past are shown.
Also, they almost made Monkey, Pigsy, and Sandy a totally new characters. It has English title "Road to Tenjiku (India)".
Monkey is the last one to join the Tripitaka's quest. A lonly, ill-mannered three years old with heart of gold in 6 foot tall body. He throws temper tantrum when he is tired/hungry/sleepy. When he first asked Tripitaka to save him from stone prison, he had no intention of going to Tenjiku. But he sensed warmth of Tripitaka, the warmth of "Nakama (meaning "fellowship" or "Friend"), and decides to join so he can be the one with the warmth. For some reason, he mismemorized the word "Nakama" as "Namaka". His love goes to his Namaka and food.
Tripitaka was raised in poverty and became a monk after his parents died. He set off to the Tenjiku when Buddha ordered him to restore the peace to the country by bringing back scriptures. Kind hearted and Determined but naive. A new rumour is spreading around demons that eating Tripitaka would grant them everlasting life.
Sandy is the first disciple of Tripitaka. His weapon is a pair of Sais and is a clairvoyant demon. He is most trusted by Tripitaka, always standing right behind or beside him. Being a ladies' man, he usually tells people around that wants to go to Tenjiku because women of Tenjiku is famous for their beauty. Only Tripitaka knows that Sandy once served evil demon lord and have commited some evil deeds. Sandy is a sinner seeking redemption.
Pigsy is a young pig demon who was born in the clan of wild boar demons. Everyone of the clan makes fun of him, and he is suffering from low esteem. One day, he meets Tripitaka and Sandy, and decide to join them. Pigsy says he want to go to Tenjiku because Tenjiku is supposed to be a gourmet heaven. But deep in his heart, he wants to prove he is somebody and hopes to find some way to save his clan from everlasting poverty. He is short and skinny but he eats a lot.
Rin Rin is a traveling thief girl and became mortal enemy of Monkey after she stole his stick. (Of course, Monkey got it back.) She seems to follow the same route as Monkey, so they have a little bickering every episodes. Wierdly enough, Monkey is starting to gets really uneasy when Rin Rin is being friendly to other guys...
I'd say script is poor, but actors are managing to make up for it.

OHNO!!!!
I'm not a big fan of remakes, infact I think I can go as far as to say 'I HATE THEM!!'.
Saw the picture, didn't like it. For a start the costume don't look as (dare I say) cheaply made, lol. Any remakes (including that new dukes of hazard thing I don't even want to see) don't usually turn out to be as good as the originals. TV companies should really stop doing these remake things as to me, it seems to destroy the whole image of the originals. Monkey is now classed as a cult classic is it not?? so why spoil that by doing a modern day version. I wonder what all the fans of the godzila films were to say if they were done as remakes.
Happy Monkeying. :D

Kuan Yin aka Quan Yin can take the form of a human male or female
He / She is not the only Bohhdisatva to be portray as either gender as
Buddhist doctrine has shown before.
Thank you

I saw the new Monkey last week.
Don't get your hopes up. It is a typical Japanese drama production.
Not a patch on the original.

Monkey like that i can live with infact i like his armour, tripitaka nice try, sandy, the ideas there and i guess i could come to terms with it, BUT PIGSY!!!!!!!!!! , Man, that guys acting better be good, Pigsy: Brute strenght, Lust, Greed, and a bit of a coward, this guy doesn't look all that, ive seen images of other versions, and plays, and the best is by far, the one we all know and love, Toshiyuki Nishida,to my mind, THAT is the epitome of Pigsy, On this New one, man, at least they could Loose the hat, all those Brightly coloured clothes, just dont say 'Pig Spirit' , to me, nice boots though, a little cartoony

It is decided that Masaaki Sakai appears for a last episode of the new series as a guest
Guest - March 19, 2006 01:01 PM (GMT)
My mother-in-law has sent me the first few episodes of the new Monkey, not as good as the original!
Lost a lot of humour and seems more aimed at kids, like power rangers.
G - March 20, 2006 05:14 PM (GMT)
The final episode of the new version just aired tonight.
One of the original cast (Sakai) guest starred.
It seems that there is going to be a sequel.
My general impression (by the way, I'm Japanese and writing from Tokyo);
not bad at all. Certainly better than the renewed version aired in the 90s.
T - March 21, 2006 10:07 AM (GMT)
Mr Sakai's special appearance was good, particularly the last line spoken by him for closing the main part of the episode. Yes, we know he knows "it's really painful...."
Comparison between the old Monkey in the late 70's and the 2006 version is culturally intriguing. There seems certain timing people want to see Monkey. The dissapointing outcome of other TV Monkey productions starring other actors as Monkey and aired during the period between the two successful ones may tell something. TV deamas reflect values of people of the times. The message the producer of the 2006 version wanted to convey through the mouths of Shingo Katori and his NAMAKAs in the last episode, using words easy for kids to undertand, is clear.

The movie of
Road to Tenjiku will be out next summer. The director and writer from TV series will direct and write for the movie. The movie's budget will be a billion yen, which means big budget for Japanese movies. and it is well known that big budgeted Japanese movies have tendency to flop.
Trust me, I have no idea why the production team kept the director and the writer. The TV series had absolutely horrible direction and abysmal scripts.
As a one of royal follower of the original Chinese novel, I have to sadly admit I am going to the movie theater and actually pay some money to witness how rotten Japanese show biz would spoil the one of the greatest materials on the human history.

I just discovered that it's out on DVD already and apparently has subtitles in english. So should be well worth a look for those of us who can't wait for (or are dubious about happening) the dubbed version.
I thought that was pretty exciting news. I can't wait to get a copy to check out

Hey I watched the fifth episode yesterday! (it's the one where Goku and co. find a village of kids) Yeah... it's kind of like for the kids.... the plotline was not so good, the fight scenes blah, but hey! It was so touching I shed a few tears! The kid actor as JunJun was good, and the little girl actor was cute! I didn't like Goku much at first but after a while, he became more and more likeable, and cool! One scene where he slept with the kids, he made such a CUTE picture I squealed!! XDD Anyway, not as humourous as I thought (urgh) but... at least there were some good tries, totally unnecessary appearances of OC RinRin (... we all know where this relationship is heading, right? -_- Geez.... why do ppl like to pair up Goku with a girl anyway?), but hey, good acting saves the day! It's a bit abrupt though, when Goku changes his voice suddenly from a shout to a low, rumbly voice, but on the whole, I think he uses his voice quite well. Heh. Storyline could be better though. *sigh* And in this particular chapter, the focus of the story was all on Goku. Gojyo and Hakkai and Sanzo didn't have much screen time. Hmm. I think Sanzo's quite good though. Hakkai doesn't look like a pig at all!! At least they should have given him a pig snout and ears. =_=
..... ######y Cheung's version was much better, but hey! This is something different we've never seen before! Anyone from Malaysia here? It's airing on 8TV Saturday and Sunday, 6.00-7.00 p.m. XD It's in the original Japanese with Malay and Chinese subtitiles. XDD So it sounds cool AND we get to learn Japanese! Whoopee! XDD
