Title: Monkey Dvd Releases - What The Differences Are
Description: Advice on which DVD boxsets to buy
saiyuuki - March 21, 2005 05:28 PM (GMT)
People often ask about which Monkey DVD releases are the best to buy, e.g. the Monkey Complete Series DVD boxset released in the UK at the end of 2004, or the 5 digipacks DVD boxsets that were released in the UK earlier in 2004.
Here's a description of the differences between these releases that should help.
The UK "Monkey Complete Series" DVD boxset contains the 13 Monkey DVDs that were previously released individually in the UK. These include the 39 episodes we all know and love, along with the 13 unseen Monkey episodes, subtitled into English with original Japanese audio.
The 5 digipack boxsets released in 2004 contain the 39 episodes, plus the 13 unseen Monkey episodes dubbed into English (the versions with English subtitles and original Japanese audio are not present here).
DO NOT buy all 5 digipack boxsets - the 5th digipack contains only the 13 unseen Monkey episodes dubbed into English - these are already spread across the 3rd and 4th digipacks amongst the 39 episodes we already know and love. So if you've bought the 3rd and 4th digipacks, don't buy the 5th digipack, as it doesn't contain anything new (apart from a different poster!)
Other things you get with the 5 digipacks released in 2004 (not in the Monkey Complete Series DVD boxset):
- Free double-sided poster with each digipack
- All episodes are chaptered
- Dubbing cast biographies
- Remixes of Monkey Magic by Grebeau
- 30-minute documentary "Monkey Nuts- The 13 Lost Episodes" about the redubbing of the 13 unseen episodes
- BBC Breakfast interview with David Collings and Andrew Sachs
More details of the 5 digipacks here:
http://www.monkeyheaven.com/dvdboxsets.htmlMore details of the 13 individual Monkey DVDs here:
http://www.monkeyheaven.com/dvds_details.htmlIt all boils down to the question:
- Do you want to own the 13 unseen Monkey episodes in English-subtitled or English-dubbed form?
A. In English-subtitled form with Japanese audio: buy the cheaper Monkey Complete Series DVD boxset.
B. In English-dubbed form: buy the more expensive digipacks released earlier in 2004.
C. If you want BOTH the English-subtitled and English-dubbed versions, buy the Monkey Complete Series DVD boxset AND digipack 5 that was released in 2004, which contains just the 13 unseen episodes, dubbed into English

So the complete boxed set that Play, Sendit etc. are selling which says '
A box set collecting together all the episodes from Monkey!, including previously undubbed episodes now complete with the vocal talents of original cast members Miriam Margoyles, Burt Kwouk, Andrew Sachs and David Collings.' are actually still just subtitled?
i.e.

That's correct - the information listed on these websites is 100% incorrect. There are no redubbed episodes on this "Monkey Complete Boxset", they're only subtitled.
I have notified my contact at Fabulous Films and he will get this corrected.
On the other hand, the redubbed episodes can be found on these UK Monkey DVD boxsets (boxsets 3 and 4 each contain 6/7 of them, while boxset 5 contains all 13 redubbed together):
http://www.monkeyheaven.com/dvdboxsets.htmlMany thanks for pointing out the error - much appreciated :)
By the way, I created a new page on my site the other month that spells out EXACTLY what is and isn't contained on each boxset / video / DVD etc.

The Monkey videos and DVDs came out in England FIRST! ;)
The videos were released in 2000, DVDs in 2002, and DVD boxsets in 2004.
You'll find the videos and DVDs in the "TV shows" or "Martial arts" section in most HMV shops around the UK, as well as other video / DVD shops - but HMV seems to be the one that always stocks it.
Follow the links from my page:

If you go to www.blahdvd.com, you'll find all the individual UK Monkey DVDs for £6.99 each at the moment, with free postage!

Have you compared the contents of the discs in the boxset with the individual volumes that have been avilable? I already had the first thirteen when the last 4 volumes and the box were released, so I opted for the single volumes to finish the set. I was wondering if there was anything extra in the box to make it worthwhile.
Cheers
Talos

there a 4 digipack things available but they have the same content as the complete box set the only difference being that the complete box set seems to be cheaper than buying all the individual ones
my friend has the single ones i will compare them thorougly
Skiller - February 26, 2006 11:47 PM (GMT)
antstorm, are the "lost" episodes dubbed in that box set? and which k-mart was it at?
skywalka - April 29, 2006 01:59 PM (GMT)
Hey AntStorm.
I got the first 3 UK Digipacks from CD-WOW online. They haven't had the 4th pack till now & they want over $90!
I'd also like to know if this pack has the dubbed versions since it looks different to the complete set I've seen in other pictures.
I'd also like to know which K-Mart.
Thanx.
skywalka - April 29, 2006 02:09 PM (GMT)
http://www.sanity.com.au/search/search.asp...3&go_button.y=6There are seperate packs that look different from those on the site too.

skywalka - May 12, 2006 09:44 PM (GMT)
:o So the new Monkey box sets in Australia are dubbed, not subtitled!
CloudStrife - May 15, 2006 08:23 AM (GMT)
You know, they say 'never before seen on TV', but I saw one of them (I think it was called Monkey's Yearning') on Channel 4 (dubbed) when they showed it late at night.
skywalka - May 15, 2006 03:32 PM (GMT)
Is Channel 4 a PayTV channel?
CloudStrife - May 16, 2006 07:44 AM (GMT)
No. It's one of the 5 basic channels here in England.
