Title: For the Mardyke fan...

MTA - October 21, 2007 10:12 AM (GMT)
Whilst browsing the GMES website, I stumbled upon this little treasure:

http://www.gmes.org.uk/photos/2007-09%20SM.../smee07010.html

It looks to clean to be an older type, presumably it has either been restored or bought new  If I was more into IC engined engines then I would probably buy one if it looked that good!

peterbrynt - October 21, 2007 10:28 AM (GMT)
Simon,

That's the brand new Pullman Set which was made by Mardyke either last year or a couple of years a go.

Thanks
Peter

glastonrail - October 21, 2007 10:34 AM (GMT)
A very interesting Blue Pullman set there, Simon. They're quite rare. Quite expensive too. An ordinary heavy-duty Hymek these days costs £12,100.

On another note, the collection of photos is generally nice as well!! :)

Cheers,

Quite rare, in that this set was the only one produced.

It was built by Des DeSmedt 2-3 years ago; I don't know if it has sold yet or was on a trip out by the Mardyke guys.

It's a real showstopper- but as Dom says, any form of Blue Pullman in any gauge is pretty rare despite the enthusiasts' love of the prototype.

Note the width of the coaches is slightly wider than the earlier Mardyke sets; as I've found with ours, people with a waist of 36" or more just won't fit!

Tim

craiggluyas - October 23, 2007 07:01 AM (GMT)
What are the 'standard' sizes Tim?

timbodunn - October 23, 2007 08:50 AM (GMT)
I'll go and measure at the weekend, but I think they're about 500mm wide.

The USA outline coaches (and I think the more recent designs of stock) are about 50mm wider. The Blue Pullman I assume is one of the wider ones, despite being UK outline.

Anecdotes I've heard from other operators suggest that the earlier UK outline ones (eg my set) often got the larger person trapped and caused a few embarrasing moments...

Must be fun helping the young ladies in/out... ;)

peterbrynt - October 23, 2007 03:31 PM (GMT)
Looking through an old email, it looks like the Mardyke set is actually resident at the club. Very Nice club loco!

timbodunn - October 23, 2007 03:44 PM (GMT)
Is it a resident? Would love to know who owns it.

I've got a long distant wish to get some of the "multiple unit" Mardykes together... the APT, the 125, Blue Pullman and one of the DMUs. That'd be quite an event. Would need a lengthy line to host it though...

There's also a complete 7 car TGV somewhere (Oxfordshire, I last saw) - plus a number of other Euro prototypes in Holland and Finland.

craiggluyas - October 23, 2007 04:25 PM (GMT)
Richard shaw of Coalyard railway, Kidderminster has just got the DMU. Matt Rutherford has the Leyland thing.

Really jealous now Tim! am after a HST myself, but i guess i'm just going to have to make it!!!!

Tim,

It is.

Thanks
Peter

timbodunn - October 23, 2007 05:12 PM (GMT)
Craig, do you know which model DMU it is? Is that the one that was languishing at the Mardyke Valley Railway sheds when I saw it in January... think it was a bit like a class 101.

timbodunn - October 23, 2007 05:16 PM (GMT)
Incidentally, I'm always on the lookout for other multiple-unit types in 7.25" gauge... I'm afraid I've pretty much scoured Europe for the other HSTs and there just aren't any going spare... but if anyone hears of a dummy car, we still need one!

craiggluyas - October 23, 2007 09:00 PM (GMT)
Its the 101. Again gutted i missed it!!!!!

Planning something multiple unit based. Just not sure what yet.

Was brought up on Brian Howorths 7¼" gauge 150 001 sprinter.

timbodunn - October 23, 2007 09:17 PM (GMT)
Bugger. I made an offer for that a year ago!
Must mean there's quite a bit of ex-works Mardyke stuff been released now. Look out for a couple of steam locos, and a 10.25" TGV and a USA style diesel too.

craiggluyas - October 23, 2007 09:35 PM (GMT)
How do you get to find out about them though????

Craig

timbodunn - October 24, 2007 11:49 AM (GMT)
I've emailed Richard De Smedt at Mardyke to find out. He's also on 01708 554618. www.mardyke.co.uk

craiggluyas - October 24, 2007 07:02 PM (GMT)
Let me know mate!

the trains owned by a chap called Gary Peach. He bought it from Mardyke when Des De Smidt died. It was Des' personal train but he never used it much and its virtually brand new.

It came to the GCR's gala day this year. It has a brand new engine so it went round the railway fully loaded while ticking over!

It can only be driven from one end however, which makes operations on an end to end line hard.

railbus - December 24, 2007 04:25 PM (GMT)
I wondered who owned it, I hope he takes it to more traks in 2008!

andysleigh - December 28, 2007 10:05 PM (GMT)
i was there when that was on site. i overheard the owner talking about its hisory, but i forgot what he said.

railbus - December 29, 2007 09:19 AM (GMT)
There isnt much history to it really as it was only built in 2006! Their is a picture of old Des stood next to it at mis house on the Mardyke website.

railbus - January 6, 2008 06:37 PM (GMT)

timbodunn - February 2, 2008 04:48 PM (GMT)
That's why we're now going to be powering both driving cars... I don't like the idea of shunting 6 coaches at speed!

I read Mardykes are doing a 10/4 deltic for Wat tyler rly, It is to be diesel hydraulic. This could be a beast!

railbus - March 25, 2008 05:36 PM (GMT)
Hi Guys,
I have spoken with Richard De smet and the loco for Wat Tyler is the prototype Deltic (DP1) in 10 1/4 gauge.
I have some progress pics of our hymek that is being rebuilt at Mardykes and work is in a very advanced stage at www.mtg.fotopic.net

MTA - March 26, 2008 09:23 AM (GMT)
Matt,

Do you mean Mardyke's prototype Deltic or will it be a model of the full size prototype Deltic?

If the latter it is going to look superb B)

The clue is in the original message, DP1 is the number allocated to, but never carried by 'Deltic'....

Looking forward to seeing it!

Colin

railbus - March 26, 2008 03:17 PM (GMT)
It will be the big pale blue thing with white cheverons on the front! I've seen the drawings and it looks ok to me.

craiggluyas - March 26, 2008 03:19 PM (GMT)
The hymek looks great. What have you gone for, an Eaton 11 pump and motors on the bogies or prop shafts as per the prototype?
