Here are two pictures from Peter Scott of the Towans Railway, taken 17 years apart.

See if you can spot the differences (possibly quite a few!) and post them below. If someones already posted one, but has missed another, then post the one missing so we can try and complete it!

First picture taken on the 16th July 1989 of the Cromat White Hymek operating trains.


Secondly, the remains of the site, taken on the 17th May 2006!

nothing really has changed other than its gone

Apart from the obvious (i.e. no railway and greener grass!), there are some subtle changes to the buildings in the background.

I must say I do like the first picture, I like the randomness of the chalets/bungalows in the background. It reminds me a little of the layout that was next to Shifting Sands at the 7mm NGA at Burton last week...

I presume the building to the right of the 2006 shot had track running into it?

I have attached a track plan from Peter Scott which I'm usre he won't mind me posting.

I don't think the building on the right did have track running into it as the plan shows. I doubt it was there when the railway was.

Sorry, should have said who's layout it was! It's not actually Mick's work, just his photo. Layout 'The Burrows' is by Peter Page, who had travelled down from Scotland with it.

Having looked at the plan and back to the photos I can see what you mean, I think you might be right and that the building post-dates the railway.

Just spent far too long searching for this site on Live Local!



The track (or at least track bed) seems to be in place on that view. It looks like it goes around the bungalow - which is where the station is on the plan, so they may have existed together, the bungalow could easily have been a shop or tea room? There is a give away in the 2006 photo that there is a gate over the trackbed!

Here is another picture of the Towans Railway as it is now from Peter Scott - taken from the top deck of a double decker bus, the week before last.

You can clearly see the "station" buildings and platform, the tunnel mouth is out of sight in the left background.
