Description: Another 9.5" Bedfordshire line
Lambrail - May 1, 2007 02:43 PM (GMT)
I am looking for any sources of information on this 9.5" gauge railway at the Kings Arms, Cardington, Bedfordshire. I have a picture of aParver models Atlantic in a Bradford Barton book but am interested in knowing more about the line.

I also have a book with a picture of the loco at this line - can't remember which, but could be the same book. I think the loco was called Ruby. I believe that its currently on a private line in Bedfordshire. I would also be grateful for any info on this line.
Regards
Martin.

The line was around 200 yards long End to End and operated from 1964 to 1984 in the pub garden.
Trains were always operated by Ruby as far as I know. Will try and get more info as this is off the top of my head
Thanks
Peter

The book I have is the same one, so can't help with any more photos.
Peter, any more info you can give would be most appreciated.
Thanks
Martin.

It's amazing how many railways there were around. Many of them have so little available information. It would make a great book (or ten!!) if each one was written up!
Same with locos and rolling stock!

I agree, some of the small private garden lines are the most interesting.
I appreciate peoples regard to privacy, but i'm sure that a lot more could be written about private lines no longer in existance.
Strange that there seems to be so little info about the above line when it was around for a relatively long time.

What we could do with is a book like the Excellent Industrial railway society's area books with a history of each line and a list of known locos. With piccies and trackplans, could be a really interesting reference!
If only I had the talent!

The Atlantic "Ruby" was built by Parvers in Southport in 1914 and rebuilt 1962. The railway at Kings Arms opened in 1962 and ran through 4 acres of garden at the pub as an out & back of 1/4 mile with tunnel & spur to loco shed. Ruby was originally in a green livery but later in a dark blue livery. The line closed in 1982.
Info from Robin Butterell's 1966ish "Miniature Railways" and Neville Knight's "British Miniature Railways", both of which have b&w photos.

Any ideas what happened to Ruby? It must have been a size and largish locos tend not to disappear to the great railway in the sky!
