Title: Mercs 2

vix - September 1, 2008 02:45 AM (GMT)
ok folks, discuss.

remember though:

CODE
[color=#f2f2f2]spoilers!![/color]

i picked it up today at circuit city and got a magazine, a poster, and an unlockable outfit with it and then picked up the guide book as well for the hell of it.

s0njas0n - September 1, 2008 02:47 AM (GMT)
i got it at best buy with a dvd and some unlockable thing as well. i don't remember what, though.

waxc3 - September 1, 2008 06:54 PM (GMT)
i preordered long ago for the hat. played for a good while yesterday. it needs a better checkpoint system!

vix - September 1, 2008 07:18 PM (GMT)
wax, how does it look graphically on the 360?

waxc3 - September 2, 2008 11:01 AM (GMT)
in game looks pretty good. not the best looking game on the system but no complaints.
the cutscenes where you can see the character models though look cruddy! they are very very last gen looking.
the draw distance is not very far at all. like in an attack helicopter you need to get like 100 feet from the target to see it and shoot. but most places halfway through the game have SAM placements so you will be blown up if you are within a mile... boooo!
i used copters the most on the first game, and now they are not worthwhile anymore.

i have had fun with the game. i am like about 60% done somehow already! what the heck!?
i hate the fuel system thing. makes it less worthwhile to call in airstrikes and supply drops when you have to run around again and gather more fuel between missions.

i assume you two are playing coop? i want to play system link coop but that doesnt exist it seems. that was dumb to leave that out.

s0njas0n - September 2, 2008 01:38 PM (GMT)
yeah, we're playing co-op. we got to 22% in the first night. only up to 25% last night, though. we were kinda just messing around doing training and side missions, not storyline missions.

what i absolutely hate is the fact that you can be driving down a road and it looks like it's blocked a little, but when you get about 25 feet from it all of a sudden it looks completely barricaded. it's hard to dodge that when you're driving. another thing that's really graphically lame is watching the troops you call in by heli "warp" into a building. seriously?

the game is ok, it's fun co-op. i think i will finish the game for that reason alone. with the delays you'd think it would be a better quality game, but it's really unimpressive... though it still is fun.

waxc3 - September 2, 2008 01:41 PM (GMT)
all makes sense.
i loved the first one and i guess this one is better than that one... so i guess i am happy then huh...?

s0njas0n - September 2, 2008 02:08 PM (GMT)
i never played the first one. it just seems like the developers threw it together. so far, i've been bored with the story. does it pick up a little? it seems very impersonal. i realize it's a game about mercs, but maps and graphs aren't doing it for me.

another thing... why can't i copy my save file? i haven't been staying up as late gaming and vix wanted to do random stuff and it's forbidden to share save files. now i wish i let her host the game. but on another note, what if i want to back up all of my save files? there's no easy way to do that now. so if a file gets corrupted... oh well. :glare

ThumbsOfSteel - September 2, 2008 02:30 PM (GMT)
Has anyone bought this game for PS2? Does anyone plan to? From the little bit I've read in this topic, it doesn't seem like the PS3/360 graphics are all that great. The original on the PS2 was like GTA: the gameplay was so awesome that many people (like me) didn't care the graphics weren't so hot.

I loved the first one. I finally played it last year about this time. That tells you just how far behind I am on my games. Even if I stopped playing KD/WLK today and concentrated on other games, I still don't think I'd be done with the ones from 2005 by the end of this year. Meh.

What is the single-player game like? Is it more of the same? (Fine with me if it is.) I haven't seen any reviews yet.

s0njas0n - September 2, 2008 02:45 PM (GMT)
i think the graphics are fine. it's the imaging that sucks, the fact that some objects appear way later than they should. i should be able to see an entire barricade before i almost run into it. i can't say how the gameplay is at this point because, like i said i haven't done a lot of main story missions, i've just been getting into things, pretty much intro type missions.

waxc3 - September 2, 2008 03:06 PM (GMT)
single player is just like the first game mostly.
if you liked that one you will like this one.
this game to me is like mercs 1 + just cause = mercs2. totally.

there is little story honestly. it is just work for different groups and keep a balance of love/ hate with them.
the dev team said that the intro is like 20 minutes and part 3 is like 20 minutes and part 2 is 20 hours. the intro and end will always be the same but the whole middle is up to you how you progress through.

who are you guys using? i am using jen. i only used her the first game too.

sonya the draw distance when driving has been a zero issue on the 360. might be a ps3 thing? sux! i have been in the fastest car in the game at top speed and never had a problem. it is weak in the helis at any speed if you look a mile away.

s0njas0n - September 2, 2008 03:16 PM (GMT)
i'm using chris. love the chicken suit, though i refuse to use it.

vix - September 2, 2008 05:15 PM (GMT)
the draw distance driving is absurd. i mean at the last possible moment, you'll see a car or something else in front of you. it's stupid. you walk away like 15 feet from something and it disappears. it's bad.

the game is ok but honestly with all this crap that makes it kinda hard to play, i don't think i could play single player and enjoy it. there's just too much pop up, on some of the cars i can count pixels...i'm not graphics whore but the pop up issues are not fun to deal with.

s0njas0n - September 2, 2008 05:52 PM (GMT)
it's a nice filler multiplayer game. i like the fact that i'm completing the game and doing online multiplayer at the same time. more games should have coop.

vix - September 2, 2008 06:12 PM (GMT)
oh i agree. though i'm not sure i'll play it on my own unless after we do it on your ps3, we do it again on mine. :lol

s0njas0n - September 2, 2008 06:26 PM (GMT)
i'm still trying to find a way around the save file issue. since the game doesn't seem to be too long, i'll play again if we're not too busy with other games.

vix - September 2, 2008 06:39 PM (GMT)
yeah, you have a bit more on your plate at the moment as far as games go than i do. my next game probably won't be until buzz in mid sept.

waxc3 - September 2, 2008 06:59 PM (GMT)
sonya, on mine i can go to Pause and Save Game and make multiple saves myself as a backup. i would think that your has that as well in addition to the autosave feature.
you would need some external hacked software to move files to usb drives and stuff wouldnt you?

that stinks about your popins and fadeouts. that happens at like 1/2 mile or more on the 360 from what i have seen (not at 15 feet). even at 150 mph there were no streaming issues with the background coming in.

that was an issue in an article i read this weekend about the inevitable one console future... dennis dyack was talking about programming for multisystems (like this game) and the issues that arise like you are troubled with.

s0njas0n - September 2, 2008 07:15 PM (GMT)
well, yes, i can create a save, but in the xmb, generally you can go to a save and push triangle and it will say "copy" but when i tell it to copy it tells me that the file can't be copied for some reason... it's the only save file i have that does that, that i know of. even burnout i can create a copy of my save file to share even though no one would be able to use it since it's locked to my account.

the issues could be because of online play, but i don't think so. it's rare that even gta does that, but i'd have to play by myself for a little while to see if that was the case. vix and i started the game together, so the only time when i was playing by myself was when she was having a problem with her mic last night, and i honestly don't remember if it was different or not. i should check.

vix - September 2, 2008 07:44 PM (GMT)
it's a thought, it's worth a try, saving while not online.

waxc3 - September 3, 2008 11:04 AM (GMT)
yea xbox made it easy. never tried it on any ps3 game. not all games will allow you to move or copy though.
some fighters that i play with a buddy of mine can not be moved, so one of us can not use our own characters and button setups ever.

i guess if you really just only want an archival copy of your saves, just make two manual saves each time you save.

s0njas0n - September 3, 2008 01:45 PM (GMT)
ok, that's not what i'm saying. i'm able to make as many copies of the save file i want through the game, but when it comes to putting it on an external device (as i can with EVERY other save file on my ps3), i can't do it. anyway, it's kinda a bummer. i don't know what the reasoning is.

waxc3 - September 3, 2008 04:21 PM (GMT)
i got ya. sorry.
i dont know.

is it a game that has trophies?
i would think that games that are linked to achieves and trophies may be locked to a console and not just a gamertag or user name.
thats one guess.

but like i said i have just had some games that could not be moved or copied to an external card or drive. it is locked. not really sure why they do it in those cases.

is your reason for putting a save on an external to archive it or to play it elsewhere or what?
on my xbox i used to get nervous having all of my saves on that hard drive... but in the end it didnt matter. i bought a mem card for it but really never needed it either.
my original nes saves are long dead now (battery back up catridges). the ps2 ones and other memory card saves seem to be pretty safe i found but i did have a couple gamecube and ps2 files get corrupt in time for no apparent reason. edit: just remembered that my mario sunshine file died. went back to it after a while and my game was empty... weak! so i never finished or restarted it. (didnt like it enough to play through again).

well i dont know where i was going... rambling here.
so you both are playing the game in coop from the start? that working out okay? i wonder if the game ups the challenge when there are two of you. would make some of the later base takeovers a lot easier to have someone flanking the enemy!

you guys do the challenges located in your base yet?
i LOVE the ones where you shoot portraits and statues and cars flying.... so cool!

you drive the devistator yet? lol! :lol

you drive the monster car yet? that thing rules. :thumbsup

s0njas0n - September 3, 2008 05:01 PM (GMT)
yes to all of the above questions. we did as many challenges as we could before doing storyline missions pretty much. we destroyed the buildings (2 left) and took pics of the guys we killed too. we just got finished with the monster truck and are doing the buggy challenges in the base now. 33%.

i was going to give a copy of the save file to vix because i'm hosting the game and it only saves to my console.

vix - September 3, 2008 05:25 PM (GMT)
no to the trophies though, it doesn't have trophies linked to it yet. and supposedly, no game can give you retroactive trophies due to the saves being so easily copied and distributed. so in order to get trophies, in say a game like resistance if they added them in, you would have to replay the game to get them. you couldn't just download a 100% save file, etc.

however, criterion has found a way around this and will be giving us retroactive trophies for burnout. they've locked our saves to our psn id's so when the trophy patch comes out, we'll get everything we earned already. but even though the saves are locked, sonya could feasably copy her save and give it to me and i could put it on my hd, granted i couldn't do anything with it, but it's still copy-able.

my money and guns saved but it sucks that the % can't.

s0njas0n - September 3, 2008 05:38 PM (GMT)
haha, if i joined your game i would have like $9 mil. the game is getting more fun even though we sucked at that mission.

wax, did you do the winching challenges? those were kinda amusing, especially with 2 players.

vix - September 3, 2008 05:50 PM (GMT)
i mean, it's not a huge deal...it just kinda give me less ambition to actually play it by myself. the target practice missions, i couldn't imagine doing myself. ick.

s0njas0n - September 3, 2008 06:01 PM (GMT)
oh yeah, and i also meant to say, wax... was that the difficulty stays the same whether you're playing by yourself or with a partner. and if you die you just run over the person and hit triangle (probably Y in your case) and go on your merry way, there's no time, you just run and tap. it definitely makes it easy.

i was reading about gears or resistance (i can't remember which... i think gears) and you can roll/scoot behind barriers while waiting for your partner to revive you. i thought that was a good idea so you don't have to run into open fire to try and rescue a teammate. in the last resistance if you didn't get to your partner in time you just revived next to them, it was weird and easy to cheat.

i was going to give a copy of the save file to vix because i'm hosting the game and it only saves to my console.

you guys destroy the billboards and find the spare parts? i like those collectibles most so far.

that is weak that the host gets to save and the person joining gets a 0% game file!? wow.

i did one winch challenge only. did like one or two challenges for each person and only did a level 3 for one of them. doing level 3 challenges i think unlock new costumes. have not looked yet.

i died in two LONG missions and had to redo the entire thing 100%. it was soooo stupid. i had gotten the mission. driven to the place. gotten all of my weapons. killed 90% of the dudes, blew up several spawning houses. destroyed both tanks... i mean it was like 20 minutes of work and i died. restart and do all of it back at the home base!!!!? WEAAAAK! i was not pleased. :glare

gears 1 you get a little time to wait until you bleed out but you can not move to safety. maybe in gears 2 you can creep away. sounds familiar.
i love the halo coop respawn! if the living player is not in battle you just pop back in. keeps the action going. (plus makes beating legendary for my friends more tolerable when i die once and they die 9999999 times). :smirk

vix - September 3, 2008 06:29 PM (GMT)
do you ever get to carry more than two weapons at one as far as guns go?

waxc3 - September 3, 2008 06:58 PM (GMT)
QUOTE (vix @ Sep 3 2008, 02:29 PM)
do you ever get to carry more than two weapons at one as far as guns go?

as far as i am no.
i think the first game it was always 2 firearms, and 2 grenade types.

i tend to keep a big machine gun with the 75 or 100 clip, or a sniper rifle. my other weapon is always whatever the enemies are carrying so i have nonstop ammo.

s0njas0n - September 3, 2008 07:09 PM (GMT)
yeah, i played gears 1, i got yelled at a lot when i died. i'm looking forward to getting 2 and doing co-op with my nephew online :D

yeah, we knew beforehand that it would only save to one person's file, but i didn't realize that i wasn't going to be able to copy it. oh well.

i've picked up one spare part behind the mansion near the water, but that's it... they're hidden in billboards you say? we'll have to check that out.

vix - September 3, 2008 07:09 PM (GMT)
not sure i've seen the big gun yet, what's it called?

waxc3 - September 4, 2008 10:53 AM (GMT)
you may not have been told yet but when you work for the local rebels (the second group of dudes) one of their extra requests is to destroy billboards. there are so many and of course they are easy to spot, but having the c4 with you is not always available. makes you call in a c4 delivery... but i just enjoy it! edit: spare parts are seperate from that! just a different type of collectible. i might have 9 spart parts maybe. some of them are really funny! read what they are quick when you open the red box. i think one of them was like a sock or something.

the machine gun i was talking about may just have been called machine gun. i just liked that two of them had huge ammo capacity.

the first two guns you use in the game (other than the pistol when you die) are an ak47 from an enemy and you start with the carbine rifle. both are good enough, but they hold what, like 30 rounds maybe.

the gun i try to keep whenever i can has a 75 or 100 drum on it! wayyyyy less reloading and it still reloads really quick when you need to.

with that gun you can rambo run right into an emcampment and take down anyone outside before you reload once. c4 on the respawn house, run, boom! and the place is yours.

later the emcampments get tougher though. :smirk 4 tanks and 4 respawn houses and 4 alarms and 10 snipers and mounted grenade launchers aimed at you, sam placements so no air support.... THAT is when having a partner would rule.

ya know thats pretty tough what you guys are stuck with. playing coop but one of you gets no progress other than money. i understand why they did it but still... :(

s0njas0n - September 4, 2008 12:41 PM (GMT)
yeah, we've only worked for the PMC and UP so far. we just got to the pirate area. that one had the setup you described pretty much. you know what i think is pitiful? one melee hit is just as effective as a shot to the head. i've killed so many people just by running up to them and beating them on the head.

i've been using the assault rifle and automatic rifle or something like that for the most part. on occasion when i find an rpg i use that too, but i hate the pistol, it's nothing on a grenade launcher.

last night we were doing the bunker buster (? after you go near the pirates in the north) and i meleed a guy inside of a hideout and i had so little health that i died, but i was too close to the wall i got stuck in the wall. vix revived me, but i couldn't go anywhere... i dont' know maybe 3 minutes? then she got to the bunker and i decided to explode some c4 by me to see if i could blast myself out, and after the second explosion i finally made it. that was.... annoying.

another glitch we had last night was we were doing the race around the PMC challenge and the last bridge kept setting us on fire. it took us like 15 tries to get it. we started tag teaming, one person does the first checkpoints and then meet up on the landing strip and the second person would try to do the last half. unfortunately, every time we hit the little bridge right in front of the house we would catch fire, sometimes explode. it must have been another in-game troll.

how do you become neutral to get on the VZ bases?

waxc3 - September 4, 2008 03:24 PM (GMT)
vz will always hate u and everyone else. the local rebels i had to pay off after getting all helpers and doing several oil missions. then their first meet opens and u will see the bill board challenge.

s0njas0n - September 4, 2008 03:35 PM (GMT)
is that the faction with the fist as the symbol? because that's the one i'm trying to get to... i think. there's a job down there that's been open since the beginning of the game. when you get there it says you have to be neutral to get in. it's in the amazon.

just found something new out. if there's multiple items to pick up in an area you can mark them all with triangle and it will pick them up all at once. *sigh*

vix - September 4, 2008 04:31 PM (GMT)
:doh about the items. :lol

waxc3 - September 4, 2008 05:25 PM (GMT)
yea i had him pick up 3 things right away. go to your base. tell the australian girl to settle things w a faction. cost me 2 million. they hate u cause u did the oil missions to kill or capture their vips i bet.

s0njas0n - September 4, 2008 05:35 PM (GMT)
i did a bit of research, and i read if you go over there and call an airstrike and blow up a couple of buildings and get out before anyone really notices... that you can do it without making anyone else mad at you. then the base will be neutral too. i dunno.
