Title: Make the North Star
Description: Diameter? Objects?

ThumbsOfSteel - July 4, 2008 12:47 PM (GMT)
I was just wondering if anyone else had ever tried playing this level for largest diameter or number of objects. It's weird because nothing ever seems to disappear. Also, you have to be careful not to go over the size limit or the King gets mad and you fail the level. I think the size limit is about 12m50cm.

Here are my best scores:

Diameter - 12m42cm
Objects - 800

Maybe people find the level too easy or just not fun enough to play for anything besides the objective. Still, I find it odd that this hasn't come up before. (Actually, it has. Just not in almost 3 years. Plus I wasn't here then, so it doesn't count. Just kidding. :P ) There's no time limit, so it's accessible to just about anybody.

What do you think?

i wasn't around then either and i didn't play competitively. i still have yet to even complete my collection in kd, lol. i do plan to, though.

doesn't the king stop you if you go too big thus making all the scores the same? i don't remember.

As long as you manage to guess right and stop before you grow and the King stops for you, you're okay. If the King stops you, the level ends and you wind up with nothing. It's potentially annoying that way for scores, but no more than for trying to get 10m. The scores are all the same if everyone fails the level and we all get nothing, but I don't think that's what you meant. :P

oh, i didn't know that. interesting. i'll have to give it a go at some point.

Here are some strategies (some tested, some not) for anyone who tries this.

Size:

I think the limit is 12m50cm. Reading a topic on here from 2005 seems to confirm this. Nobody has posted anything over that.

Try getting the bus stop. You must be a bit over 12m to get it. You know you're not too big if you can't get it, but you might be close. Getting one or two of these might put you over though.

Do what you usually do to get exactly 10m and then get regular trees until you fail the level. Count them as you go and get one less next time.

Objects:

Go into the lower town before getting anything else. There's a small area surrounded by walls that you can't get into later without shrinking.

*end strategies*

It occurred to me the other day that this level is an almost perfect copy of the same area from MAS 9. I can't believe I still notice things in this game that I didn't before. I just noticed the katamari in Virgo is covered with hearts. The developers put so much care and attention to detail in these games...

I think you start at 3m because you can't roll up the giant watermelons or the log fences but you can roll up the boats and the vending machines.

Thoughts? :shrug

I would say that's exactly right! I tested it further: You can roll up the panda ride (2m99cm1mm) but not the sumo wrestler (3m1mm). :thumbsup

One thing I love doing on this level: failing. I love rolling up all the trees in the upper town until you can't see anything else but green on your screen. :) And I love the King's reaction afterward. :heh
