Title: New Features/Levels for Next Katamari Game
Description: If a new one gets made...
ThumbsOfSteel - June 21, 2008 05:44 AM (GMT)
First, don't get your hopes up about a new game. I don't know any more than you do.
If a new katamari game were in development, what new types of levels would you like to see?
What about a level where the whole thing was set up like an obstacle course? I'm not even sure I'd like that one, but it might be interesting.
Another idea I had today is: a shrinking contest. Many of the levels in the existing games are set up with the largest size as the goal. It's really annoying in these levels to get stuck somewhere and lose items and size. But what about a level where you start out huge and the goal is to roll around the stage to find strategically placed gaps to wedge into and shrink on purpose. Imagine some bizarre version of Make the Moon in KD where you start the level at 800m+ and try to get to 1m by the end. This idea also lends itself to separate "as small as possible" and "as fast as possible" modes like in WLK.
For all I know, one or both of these ideas have already been in M&MK or BK. I haven't played either, so I wouldn't know.
Anyway, what do you think?
vix - June 21, 2008 06:23 AM (GMT)
we've talked about this before but it's always fun to revive it after a game comes out cause people have more ideas, etc.
i still want an Amusement Park level. I think that would be awesome. Roller coasters, swing rides, etc. you start out small picking up trash and what not. Good times.
A fully underwater level, like an ocean would be sweet too.
that's all i got for the momen, i'll come up with more tomorrow.
ThumbsOfSteel - June 22, 2008 12:53 AM (GMT)
Here's a few more:
1) A haunted house level. Rolling up ghosts and such could be fun.
2) A giant mall. (No zombies.)
3) A jungle level. Kind of like the friends level in WLK, but with more trees and less people. Maybe a guy in one of those goofy giant explorer hats could be running around.
What about some new features? Some very light RPG elements could be fun, like leveling up to gain the ability to dash longer or even unlock infinite dashing.
vix - June 22, 2008 02:27 AM (GMT)
there was a tiny hidden spot in one MMK level that had a haunted house. it was really cool. a full level like that would be awesome.
a level set in japan, starting out small and working your way up to big would be sweet.
I don't think a leveling up system would work. I don't think I would want one either.
ThumbsOfSteel - June 22, 2008 03:53 AM (GMT)
I don't think I would want a leveling up system, either. My main point was that maybe they could get rid of the limit on dashing. In the games I've played, you can't dash more than 3 times in a row. Maybe that's not it exactly, but if you dash too much the prince gets tired. They could put in an option to play old-school (limited dashing) or unlimited. They could put an emblem (maybe a special symbol or a hat for the prince) on the gameplay and/or results screen so that any pics or vids would show if you were using infinite dashing.
vix - June 22, 2008 04:38 AM (GMT)
maybe infinite dashing but i'm meh either way, i kinda rarely ever use it. :lol

What about:
1) a night level? I mean something besides the fireflies in WLK. Katamari games are absurd and weird, but even taking that into account it never made sense to see a burglar on the roof during the day. All the lights and lampposts would be lit up. You could roll up raccoons, owls, and other nocturnal animals. There could be new people like "drunk guy" and "all-night convenience store guy" to roll up.
2) a level with different weather? Even in the snow level in WLK it didn't snow. You can roll up clouds and rain in the existing games but it never rains when you're smaller. What if it was raining and you rolled up into a giant ball of mud?
3) a Splinter Cell rip-off? You sneak around various environments in the dark with night-vision goggles rolling up people from behind.
4) a GTA rip-off? The Prince is dressed up like a :pimp and you roll up nothing but...well, you know.
:lol
s0njas0n - July 3, 2008 11:13 AM (GMT)
in mmk there were different times of day. i really have been trying to think of other good levels, but i honestly can't think of any. i think the haunted house and amusement park levels sound fun, though.
vix - July 3, 2008 06:23 PM (GMT)
night would be sweet. indeed.
FoominFan - August 21, 2008 11:42 PM (GMT)
How 'bout:
A level where you roll up as many humans as humanly ( :lol ) possible.
A level where you start out as 1mm and you have to collect dust to get big enough to collect actual solid objects. ( :shrug )
A level where you have 20 minutes to collect every cousin from the game series. All of the cousins are hidden well so it's a challenge. (Yes, I've seen the Catch the Cousins level from Beautiful Katamari, (was it?) but the placings of the cousins were too obvious and it didn't feature all of them (I think). :thumbsup
A level where you can play as any cousin you want (in substitute for the Prince). :shrug
Comments? :howyoudoin
jakeslashgod - August 23, 2008 12:53 PM (GMT)
you can always play as any cousin you want
a space level where you are small would be quite cool, landing on the planets and rolling up small aliens and the american flag on the moon etc. until you are big enough to roll up saturns rings, asteroids, rockets and eventually your get big enough to roll up all the planets like in schloss cosmos

Here are my ideas:
1. A full-growing level. You start out in Micro meters rolling up Molecules. (The ones you roll up change the object you're eating and every other "clone" of it) Grow large enough and you can roll up stuff like germs. go onto people and you fall through ending in their blood stream. if you get too big inside of it, the person explodes. (Just him/her disappearing and everything you could roll up inside of him/her flies out.) Then once you're big enough to see, You can roll up crumbs untill at thumb-tack level. Then, you fly into space once you're the size of Earth. (Like in BK) roll up everything you normaly do, Then you can roll up the very Milky Way Galaxy. Then Clusters of galaxies untill you can roll up the fabric of space and time itself. You roll up over sized clocks at that time untill you're big enough to roll up the king that was watching you as you rolled up the FoS and TI. (When you started to roll up those, You were as big as his head.) Once you roll up him, you have created the Universes'es Mirror.
2. You can enter TVs and computers so you can roll up the internet and TV stations. computers and TVs can connect to other computers and TVs. each time you go in one, they go to the next computer/TV in a never-ending chain.
3. A paint the world level. (Ab. is PtW)
4. Secret areas that hold lots of items smaller then you. (Or at least smaller then the thought size you would come in it.) There's one-way in, and a bigger one-way out.
5. Make your own level obviously!
FoominFan - August 24, 2008 12:34 AM (GMT)
@ receer6: I like the first one and fourth one. Secret areas and rolling up molecules would be quite fun! :thumbsup

@ receer6: What game is that on?
_____________________________________________
Anyway, other ideas:
1) Roll up anything at any size. (For example, you can roll up a car when you're let's say 10cm, so the Prince is practically rolling a car around. :lol )
2) Try to find the smallest item in the level. (A challenge, because you have to avoid picking up anything except for the smallest item. :frusty ) The king will then evaluate your item choice at the end. Unlike Taurus and Ursa Major on KD, 'Tiny' is a good thing. (Gigantic is not. :doh )
That's all I have for now. :D

Are you talking asking which idea was from Tasty Planet? It's 1. You really should play it.

Katamari Future
I came up with an entire game nearly, (but was not able to get online at the moment) yesterday as i sat in the sun.
I am way too lazy to type it all now but the gist was:
a time travel katamari.
1. not sure what went wrong, maybe the king was vacationing in the future. he messed something up and is stuck there.
2. he sends word to the prince who must then travel to the big bang! the goal is set everything right, by of course rolling up things! :thumbsup
3. prince wll have random jobs like in the previous games but each main level is a jump ahead in time (working his way forward to the present, then the finale in in the future).
4. each level would be themed on that time period. we would next go to the prehistoric time and have a very dinosaur like level.
5. then the ancients would include greece, egypt, rome, china, the south american cultures, etc. several different levels take place around this time.
6. the next stage is closer to the american revolution. it would focus on europe and the many great things that took place then, then over to the early americas.
7. a more modern stage is next. anything in the last 100 years fits here and the entire world is present. again several tasks could be done during this time.
8. the future! the last stages are here, and how cool would a katamari world look in the distant future! :)
not sure if it is as cool as it sounds in my head, but that is my idea. :)
having a game set like this would not allow for the same old routine of tiny levels first and biggest levels last (but it is time to break the mold).
reecer6 - August 24, 2008 10:36 PM (GMT)
If they DO make that, I hope the creator of the Katamari (AKA Boss of Namco) breaks loose and puts games on the Wii. Or at least you have to play it with classic controller/Gamecube controller. (Or Wiimote with Nunchuck!) Or Namco tells Sony to make a Controller that fits inside the GC in a Wii because that game would've been THE BEST GAME IN HISTORY!!!!!!!
vix - August 24, 2008 11:14 PM (GMT)
why would namco tell sony to make a controller for the wii?

Wow, this topic has really come alive! :D
I love the time idea, the space one, the microscopic one, the smallest item one (maybe this could be combined with my intentional-shrinking idea from earlier in this topic).
New feature: instant replay. For people interested in speed runs, diameters, whatever: I'm not talking about video capture for upload to the web. (Aside: I heard about an update for the PS3 that would allow for that. Does anyone know how that's going?) I'm talking about in-game video replays for personal use. The technology has been around for at least a decade on consoles much less powerful than today's models. As early as the Gran Turismo games on the PS1, you could not only watch a replay of what you did. You could also use that replay as a "ghost" to race against. I still have a replay for GT4 (PS2) saved, and it only takes up 40kb for a 10-minute race.
The bottom line: With consoles having much greater storage capability, it seems like this would work even better now than it did then. On the other hand, the number of people who like playing these games for score over the long term is probably small when compared with the GT games. Any thoughts?

This quoted idea is impossible sence You would also roll up the ground you start on before you start playing.

King Katadama - August 25, 2008 02:59 AM (GMT)
I want the prince and all cousins/second cousins to simultaniously roll the king around the fantasy mushroom land from the opening cutscene. It would be hilarious. When you roll up mushrooms, special psychadelic effects could even be added.
Also i would like to see the king and prince get totally bitched out by the queen for some crazy reason or another. They could tag team a mission together. Thats all i got for now.
