C'mon! You'll be in the freakin' mountains!! Summers there are gorgeous. I love to hike, so I'd be thrilled to go. I'd have all my gear laid out right now, and I'd be highlighting maps and reading trail guides and stretching and doing squat thrusts to get in shape. (Okay, maybe not.)
:applause for Alaska and :mad for you not being into it!!

But... Alaska is West.... unless you went waaaaaaaay East.
From what I've seen on travel shows and the like, Alaska's main attraction is nature stuff. Hiking, camping, whale watching... things like that. Though that can be fun (in moderation for myself), I'd be looking for real local places to dig through. Restaurants and the like... might be fun.
Maybe make some art while you're out there? One of the things I did while in Hawai'i was paint some watercolor sketches. <3 It was love.

yea hon i knew that alaska was west of virginia. :)
well matt i wrote a long letter to my friend explaining my feelings. some of my concern is that he doesnt know what he is getting into.
it will be 99% nature. lots of hiking. lots of public transportation... it is just not what we normally do together and i dont want to be that far from home in a bad/ uncomfortable/boring situation.
...and i dont like feeling out of control of my destiny, and i will be a good bit. at least i speak the language and know the currency! :smirk
i live IN nature now. look up western loudoun, virginia! i live at the base of the mountains! true the appalachians dont compare to mt mckinley... :P
maybe i feel i have done enough hiking and camping and stuff? i dont know.
i did love hiking the parks in CA through the redwoods and sequioas... hmmm.
the local towns and restraunts thing isnt really me too. i will take lots of great pictures at least! if i do it all i will set up an online gallery to share with you people. thanks for your advice thus far. more please!!!
i am unsure what to take with me too! when we took car trips to NY or to CA or vegas i knew what the weather would like and exactly what i would be needing. this trip seems so mysterious to me.
edit:
here is one link my buddy sent me
http://www.juneauempire.com/visit.shtmlbroadband people check out the movie that plays (for like 3 minutes). there is a lot to see in juneau. i keep wanting to spell it juno :lol :doh

I watched a small talk a while ago about two guys who visited Alaska. They looked like they had a lot of fun, but they hiked the whole trip.
But I found these links. I hope they help.
