Ok, I suppose it's finished. I don't think I'll change anything from this point on. I'll stop harassing you guys now :P

If you scan it in, or take a better picture I could try outlining and coloring it for you if you want. :smirk

It's a great picture, and I can not draw on paper if my life depended on it. :heh

vix - April 13, 2008 10:11 PM (GMT)
that's really cool. it would look awesome colored. very nice!

s0njas0n - April 14, 2008 12:32 AM (GMT)
i'll see what i can do with it. that was just a quick sketch. i just have zero experience with digital art. i'm working on it, though. the line drawing is what gets me, i think i could color it fine as long as there were no lines (like my kenta pic). plus, when i did that kenta pic the proportions turned out so much better than what i had hand drawn, weird.

katamari > kalamari - April 14, 2008 02:33 AM (GMT)
That's funny, because I think it's the line art that's easy (if it's tracing) and the coloring that I hate! :lol

s0njas0n - April 14, 2008 02:45 AM (GMT)
well, i'm gonna try it. i started to tonight, then the program crashed, i need more RAM. i was reading something tonight that helped me with the line art, so i'll try it sometime this week, i suppose.

waxc3 - April 14, 2008 10:57 AM (GMT)
great sketch!!!!! :thumbsup :china

s0njas0n - April 17, 2008 04:30 AM (GMT)
alright ... step 2: line drawing, finished! (added to first post)

vix - April 17, 2008 05:16 AM (GMT)
i dig it much. i like it.

marbig - April 17, 2008 05:26 AM (GMT)
Looks great. Can't wait to see it coloured.

waxc3 - April 17, 2008 10:48 AM (GMT)
i liked the immediacy of the first one (sketchy one) more. just being old school i guess.
share more with us sometime. you are good.

s0njas0n - April 17, 2008 12:20 PM (GMT)
thanks, but looking back on the sketch now, i don't really like it that much. i mean, it was more of a concept idea and i cleaned it up on the computer. plus, this is my first real attempt to do digital art. i think it came out pretty nice :smirk and i still need a scanner...

waxc3 - April 17, 2008 01:51 PM (GMT)
oh indeed it is very good. just my fav was the first one. your sketch lines had a lot of character and conveyed a lot about you in that moment.

discostu - April 17, 2008 04:19 PM (GMT)
the idea for the image is really cool, i love it.
i too prefer the 1st one. theres something about the face and the wire that adds an extra something.
although that is a problem that is easily rectified.
you can just use a rougher brush stroke and dont colour it with flat colour.

katamari > kalamari - April 17, 2008 07:41 PM (GMT)
Whoa! Nice job! :thumbsup

s0njas0n - April 17, 2008 09:42 PM (GMT)
yeah, it's not done, i was gonna play around with it a bit... so weird that you guys liked that crappy drawing better :lol i might have a colored version up later this week or sometime next week depending on the amount of time i decide to devote to the image.

tweaking my image :( :P but nice idea stu, i was sorta thinking of maybe some artistic-type brush strokes, again... we shall see. i liked the mask face from the game... which is what i gave her in this pic.

discostu - April 17, 2008 10:36 PM (GMT)
sorry i can remove it if you want.

s0njas0n - April 17, 2008 10:37 PM (GMT)
it's no biggie really.

s0njas0n - April 23, 2008 04:12 PM (GMT)
i have been attempting to color it in spurts, but unfortunately my computer isn't cooperating. either i need to buy more ram, or i need a pc just for media... i'm leaning toward the latter. at this rate it's gonna take me 3 weeks to color the stupid thing. i've got all of mag's solid colors done, and i had all of shikao done for the most part until the program decided to freeze up for the umpteenth time, then i gave up.

ram is easier to upgrade by yourself. one of us can walk you through it if you never did that. if you decide to go that route. chips are often cheap.
i did every pc i have had at some point.

i hope you save your drawings often!

s0njas0n - April 23, 2008 05:08 PM (GMT)
well, it's a laptop, and i know how to add ram, it's just more difficult in a laptop. in fact, i haven't even checked to see if it's easy to get to or how many dimms are currently being used. thankfully, they've stopped doing the rules of 2 thing (like where they both have to be the same amount in each dimm) for the most part. that was a pain. i've added all sorts of internal components to a desktop, it's no big deal. i really want to build one the way i want it one day, but i don't see that anytime in the near future just because it would be so expensive. if i order through dell at least i could get xp again and make the specs to my liking for the most part.

waxc3 - April 23, 2008 06:32 PM (GMT)
yea indeedie! laptops are a pain to work inside of.

s0njas0n - April 24, 2008 01:34 PM (GMT)
hmm, on the program's support site it says that lots of people are having the same trouble i am and tell me how to *fix* it until they patch the problem, except it seems it doesn't really fix anything. it has to do with the way the cache files work. let's just say without running paintshop pro my system usage is about 2-5%, when i open the program it shoots up to over 50% and just that program just kinda sits there and laughs at me. hm, i hate to spend so much money, but i might be getting photoshop, this is ridiculous.

waxc3 - April 24, 2008 03:23 PM (GMT)
which version of psp are you using? i use 7 and really like it.
does not do all that photoshop does, but it is easier and often better designed.
i also like fractal designs painter a lot.

s0njas0n - April 24, 2008 03:53 PM (GMT)
i use psp xi. it's ok, i like it now that i'm getting more familiar with it. the fact that it's a system hog is driving me nuts, though. nuts enough to spend money on stuff that works. with a student discount i can get photoshop cs3 for $299 or creativesuite 3 for $449 or something like that. i mean, yeah, it's a lot but that's a huge discount. something like 50-60% off. i'm going to try and stick it out a little longer, but i've been known to have little will-power about things that i really want to buy. well, mainly electronics. i'm an electronics junkie.

vix - April 24, 2008 04:37 PM (GMT)
what about gimp? it's freeware. might be worth a shot, no?

s0njas0n - April 24, 2008 04:38 PM (GMT)
i've used gimp, i don't like it :P i'm going to try this fix they suggest first and see what happens from there.

vix - April 24, 2008 05:21 PM (GMT)
ah, i forget if you had or not. sorry. :)

waxc3 - April 24, 2008 06:13 PM (GMT)
im an electronics junkie too. an audio/videophile.
my house is filled with stuff!
its my second favorite hobby i think, buying electronics...

my bestbuy reward zone thingie, i get BACK like 350 a year from them. :thumbsup

s0njas0n - April 25, 2008 12:55 PM (GMT)
unfortunately, their fix was for xp, but i found a way to do it on vista, i just keep my task manager running on top so i can watch the percentages and after opening the program i run disk cleanup and clear my thumbnails that windows stores. it's a pain in the butt, but it keeps the program running while i'm attempting to color and such.

i'm still trying to figure out what i want to do with the background, i want it to be simple, but i'm not sure exactly what to do... i put a random katamari on the floor though :P i'll post pics when i get the background sorted, i guess.

s0njas0n - April 25, 2008 10:34 PM (GMT)
updated with color image. it still needs to be shaded/highlighted, etc. i need ideas for the background. or do you think it looks better with no background? eh, i need opinions, please? :D

background options?
controller cord y/n?
random katamari sitting on the floor :P ? y/n?

input is appreciated, those who contribute get a virtual cookie, yum :)

vix - April 26, 2008 02:06 AM (GMT)
I like the cord, not so sure about the katamari.

perhaps if you made a generic background and hung a picture of a katamari on the wall?

discostu - April 26, 2008 02:17 PM (GMT)
agree with vix. your colouring for the gamer girl is a lot better :D i didnt know what colour she should be so i guessed

s0njas0n - April 26, 2008 03:40 PM (GMT)
ok, well this is it... and by that i mean i'm pretty sure i'm not changing anything. critique away...

:mag and the girl in the picture is mag, a new cousin from bk. :)

i told my sister to look at it yesterday and she asked if it was my nephew and me. i was like, um no... then today my nephew was watching me shade it and he asked if that was him and me, lol.

vix - April 27, 2008 02:05 AM (GMT)
Hahah about the nephew.

I love the shading but it feels like the glow of the tv is lost in the white background. Other than that, I love it.

s0njas0n - April 28, 2008 01:18 PM (GMT)
the colors look different on my work computer, hmm... ok, well i was going to put the whole thing in kind of a darkened room sort of, but gave up on that. would it look better if there was no glow at all or what?

i also have an idea for my next piece but it won't be katamari related, i tested out some new brush strokes this morning and it was pretty neat. gotta love online tutorials :)

waxc3 - April 28, 2008 02:36 PM (GMT)
its good. the female is even kinda hot.

the glow effect does not actually make sense scientifically (but i understand your need for it). maybe fade it much more on its edges?

edit: i like your signature! koool!

s0njas0n - April 28, 2008 02:51 PM (GMT)
kinda hot? lol. i might just take the glow out, it seems to be distracting. i'll do that later.

that's been my art signature for 13 or so years. i felt the need to have one when i was in middle school for some reason. it's alright... just like my screenname, there's no use changing it now when i've had it for such a long time.

yea. she is feminine...

s0njas0n - April 28, 2008 08:10 PM (GMT)
yeah, well, it's a girl. generally i am terrible at drawing the human figure, but it seems that digital art is much easier to manipulate than pencil art. vectors, paths etc. it wasn't too bad once i got the hang of it.
