it's ok, they definitely could have done a better job with it.

8, it's pretty addicting and the bonus cookies add some luck and fun, but it could have been better.

what is a bonus cookie?

what is a bonus cookie?

At the end of the round the King awards a random bonus. It may be for the person with the most successful dashes, the one who lost the most items, the one who picked up the most wrong things, etc. It makes it so it's possible for the loser of the round to get the most cookies if the bonus goes to them.

I'm not too partial to the online aspect. It seems too much of a cluster, especially on the smaller stages. Once I got my 50 games/1000 cookie achievements I only play the online part if one of my friends wants somebody to abuse for awhile in their quest for more cookies. For all the good rolling I do in the "real" part of the game, I absolutely suck online.

i agree, the single player is much more enjoyable than the online. but i'll play if people need help getting achievements.

thanks dr. t.

I rated it a 4. It's boring and uninspired. Only 5 levels, the same objective in every level. No online co-op.

I'm just trying to get my 50 matches before my month of gold expires.

is the objective to just get bigger than the opponent? or to collect more X than them still?

s0njas0n - January 16, 2008 06:09 PM (GMT)
it gives you an item to collect and you are supposed to collect the most of the object item.

I agree with vix. It is boring and uninspired. It also has terrible handling at the world level and the network code is seven, perhaps eight kinds of ass, constantly stopping just frequently enough (and sometimes more than frequently enough) to ensure that you lose your rhythm and, through association, mojo. The only time I ever really had fun was when I was at the house level and rolled up my two opponents, cocktail in hand splashing around as I cackled with evil glee. I figure this is probably when I got one of my "Avoid" reputation marks, in spite of my generally sunny and Wang Chung everybody-have-fun-tonight never-swear and group-hug hyphenating attitude.

Edit: I gave it a three, but that's just because of the cocktails.

6 It is ok but there is a lot better.

I gave it a 5, and it's really only that high because I'm really good at it. Obviously the network code is completely broken and lag is a constant issue. Far too much emphysis is placed on the "battle" aspect, encouraging players to dash into each other over and over again instead of it being about rolling skill, which is what I thought the game was actually all about. Obviously with as bad as the network code is, you couldn't make the levels any bigger or it would just lag more, but with only five levels, it would have been nice if three of them weren't essentially the same one. House, Neighborhood, and World all essentially put you in an enclosed space with minimal obstacles, if any, forcing a mad dash for items for the first half of the time limit, followed by constant dashing and running away for the remaining time. Boy is that loads of fun. If I host, I only ever choose those stages so people won't cry and whine or leave if I picked Street every time. You can't boot someone out of a game if they're being obnoxious. You can't force people to hit Start to fast forward through the King's babbling.

The waiting rooms are a cute idea, and while the bonus cookies seem like a good idea, I would rather the type of award be selectable and not randomly assigned. If I want my room to be a Most Wrong Items collected room, I should be able to pick that. Or at least tell me what the royal bonus is that we should be going for.

All in all, I'd say it's average. There are fixable elements that I'd like to see in the next Katamari game. Hopefully it won't be so generic.

that's why i try to only play with friends since i'm not going for any records.

i did love the little lobby thingy with the toys and stuff

I said 7. I've had some fun with it. It's the only place I know of to watch other people roll katamaris live. There are so many little diversions in between matches that add to the fun for me.

Before I got BK I was hoping for online diameter and speed competition, but that would not be fun for new players if these speed-running types keep beating Schloss Kosmos in way under 10 minutes etc.

Breninator - February 21, 2008 01:59 AM (GMT)
I voted for 5 for a few reasons.
1. They could have made it more fun, and online co-op would have been nice.
2. There's never anyone online to play with. Whenever I go to join a game it says "Unable to find planets".

I really like katamari, but I'm disappointed that so few others want to play online. If I could actually find a match once in a while, then I probably would have voted for 7 or 8.

Too much emphasis on the "battle" mechanics. If they had not added lock-on and it wouldnt be possible to get more cookies by mindlessly dashing than by rolling stuff up, I would have voted higher than 4. Also, lag and the uninspired levels arent that fun either
