Title: Katamari, most violent game of all time?
Kintaro - December 26, 2007 06:17 AM (GMT)
You know, if you think about it, katamari is an extremely violent game. smashing into people, crushing them under enormous weights onto a sphere, and then suffocating them by hurling them into space, and turning them into a burning sphere of gas. its amazing how just changing the graphics sound and layout of the game to look so happy. but what would katamari look like without that? hmm... is katamari the most violent game of all time? What do you think? XD

Ah, but if you've played the original Katamari Damancy, you know that the Hoshino family was one of the many items rolled up to create the moon in that game. The ending cinematic depicts them alive and well, albeit on the moon now, looking down at Earth. Presumably they could return if you rolled up a spaceship too, as Tomio Hoshino (the dad) is a space shuttle pilot. Since they appear in every game afterwards, that's probably what happened.
Plus, in We Love Katamari, it shows that people love being rolled up by katamaris. It's like partying with a celebrity!

This is true. but I'm still trying to picture katamari without the happy atmosphere to the game. with horror music, and screams of agony, when items are rolled up there crushed when they go under the bottom. it'd be a very different experience.

Why? It's not, nor will it ever be so why bother talking about how violent it could be if it was the exact opposite of what it is and what we love about it?
I mean, what's the point? Why bother picturing it like that?

dude its a sarcastic thread lol

If they love being rolled up, then why do they always run away?

i kinda agree, why think about turning katamari violent...

it would be so funny if it was a really dark, horror style :D
however i dont think it would be as good. i love it just the way it is

In Me and My Katamari, the King said that being rolled into a Katamari is the happiest thing you can experience.

I always say that katamari is very violent! Stealing people's things and destroying them, picking up swords and then immediately picking up people on top of them, then throwing them up into space! :P

I've felt a little megalomaniacal at times when playing this game. Especially when you get around 40-60m and you can pick up an item called "Everybody".

I'd love to see the sounds replaced by screams and stuff like that, with evil music in the background. Only to see how it would look like :P

Those screams don't look as desperate as they should~
It needs more emotion in it! More reality!!!
The kind you get when you are incredibly scared.

It seems like most of the kids in katamari run away playfully but giggle once rolled up. The elderly seem a bit bewildered, but it's the middle-aged that seem adversed to it. The businessmen are always kind of "oh god, I knew today was going to go poorly", but I suspect that's just because they've forgotten how to have a good time.
This actually gets into my favorite audio file of the game: in original Katamari, if you bump into any of the relaxing dudes in the game before you're big enough to pick them up, he let's out this shrill cry of "WHY?!?".
My girlfriend and I quote this constantly: Spill coffee on the kitchen floor - WHY?!? stub a toe getting up from the desk- WHY?!? etc. Runner up has to be "HEY, WHAT'S HAPPENING?!?" tied with the occasional "oh my gahhhddd..." from random middle aged women that makes it sound like being rolled up is somehow kinky and taboo.
In short: just because it feels good doesn't mean everyone is going to be on board straight away. I imagine it being like some kind of Buddhist thing where everyone is part of something bigger and wonderful...but there's spreadsheets to be done and cars to wax!
