Title: Rate BK

So most of you have had the game for a while now, so what's your verdict of it?

I'd say 9. It delivers a fresh, yet similar Katamari experience with a few flaws. Very addicting.

The katamari concept in and of itself is a 10, but this game, compared to the first 2, falls short. I may be overly harsh, but I feel both the control issues and the camera bring it down to a 7.
The turning of your ball is not as fast as the previous games, which can be forgiven. What really irks me is how often the katamari gets caught up on objects, bringing your rolling to a halt. I don't know what causes it, but there are an abundance of "molasses" moments when you get held up for no apparent reason. Another gripe is the up-and-over move; it's not nearly as good as in KD and WLK. You push against something that should be easily climbable and it takes multiple tries until it figures out that it should go over. Is working the first time too much to ask?
The camera far too often fails to give you a view of your ball when you're behind objects, forcing you to roll blind. This wouldn't be as much of an issue if I weren't striving for perfection, but the previous games did it right so there really is no excuse.
Even the one big improvement over the other games, no stopping to load the next phase of the run, isn't without flaws. During the moments before the phase shift, even though the game doesn't stop, it is doing some background loading of the next area. I don't know if this is taking resources away from the size-calculating aspect of the programming or if it just won't let you get to the shift size before the next area has been loaded, either way, you aren't given proper size credit for items rolled during this period. You can do the pause trick to semi-remedy this, but should you even have to?
WLK had a greater variety of levels than this game, but that doesn't really bother me.
I really do like this game; 2 months after release I'm still playing daily. I just feel it could have been so much more enjoyable if they would have gotten rid of some of the issues this game has, but the previous games don't.

I really don't have much to complain about related to this game. It's nothing new, but just on the basis of how much I've enjoyed playing it and how many good hours I've gotten out of it, I say 10.

I'd give it a 8, if it came with more levels i'd give it a 10 or a 9

Psikorps - December 23, 2007 07:42 PM (GMT)
I had to give it a 8, I would have given it a 10...but after playing M&MK and seeing the degree of what they put into that game I felt kinda "short changed" with BK.

The game is sound and awsome all around, but for being a game on a next gen console and seeing what was in a lowly PSP game...I think someone either pushed to get it out the door and didnt bother to throw as much content into it as they should have, or they just got lazy being that its the last of the Katamari series (or so they claim) that will be released and didnt care.

I gave it an 8 too.

It was great on some areas but lacked in most.

Some of the level designs were awesome but those levels were DLC so you had to pay extra for the cool levels.

I do agree with everything Dr. Thinker said as well.

I also feel that after what WLK had to offer from the beginning, this game felt like a core game. Sure there's DLC but it should have been in there to start with.

I've noticed I give out 10s fairly easily :D I think I'd give all four katamari games so far a 10.

Then again BK is one of maybe four games I've played this year that I'd give a 10 (Marble Blast Ultra, Exit, and maybe Mario Galaxy being the others ... out of those I've gotten the most good hours out of BK).

Spot on comments Vix. I'd agree 100% with everything you just said.

Score = 8

And for me personally, the ball getting stuck on objects is the single most annoying thing with BK. Its still a great, great title, especially for anyone that is new to the franchise.

Being that the game is on the 360, the color palette and the "washed" out look of it all, left me bummed a bit. The 360 is capable of so much more, shame it wasn't utilized as such.

Hopefully, Namco can flesh this series out on the 360 / PS3 with another title.

Hmm, I'm still the only one to give it a 9!

pooropeo - January 8, 2008 01:46 AM (GMT)
I feel it fell somewhat short of the glory of Katamari Damacy

[slight rant mode]

I mean, sure, the Katamaris are desperately huge, but there is more, I believe to a good katamari than size.

I also think the Katamari is considerably harder to control, bordering on slightly spastic at some points

Sometimes the rollability of some objects just seems disproportionate, like how you can roll up an island before a swan boat.

I don't get it, myself

I gave the game an 8 because, though I haven't really played any of the past katamari's, I still hear a lot about how they are longer and have more challenges. also, some of the levels are very annoying, such as seadome and roller roaster. that's honestly all the bad things I can say about this game, though. it's incredibly fun and makes for a good entry level game for any newcomer to katamari.

FrostyPrusty - January 12, 2008 07:12 AM (GMT)
7 because it is basically KD with better dashing and XBOX Live integration, which could be far better coded than it is.

ThirdCousin - January 13, 2008 07:25 AM (GMT)
Agree with the 7. Still enjoyable, but doesn't evoke the sense of sheer wonderment that W<3K gave. Plus, we were promised around 5000 objects, not the 3600 we actually got.
