I'm not sure how many of you remember this radio station(or even know of it for that matter). It was a national station that played oldies and was based in NYC. It had Cousin Brucie as one of the biggest dj's and it had Mickey Dolenz(a Monkee) on as a morning show. It had full streaming online and was likely the most popular station in NY and the surrounding area, if not the US since you could listen online.
Well, shortly after Mickey's 100th show, about 5pm est, the station was "Jacked" and they switched the music, without warning, to hip hop, rock, punk, etc. I believe they started it out by playing a song from the Beastie Boys. The station was now called Jack FM. Dj'less music, "playing what you want" they said.
Needless to say, a lot of people were pissed and it even made the news that night that the most beloved station and dj's got axed without warning.
This was back in 2005. Apparently people never got over being pissed off.
A few days ago, at exactly 1:01 pm, CBS FM returned(of course after playing the the last Jack FM song: Journey's Don't Stop Believing, a la the Sopranos[which was actually filmed in my area, woo]) to the airwaves with Frank Sinatra's "Summer Wind" followed by greetings from former CBS FM DJs Harry Harrison and Ron Lundy, leading into clips of music, movies, television shows, and events from each year starting in 1964 through the 1980s, with WCBS-FM jingles interspersed between. Former mayor Ed Koch then welcomed back the format, noting the "mistake" WCBS-FM had made with the switch)italics quoted from wikipedia).
Anyways, I'm so damn excited to finally have this station back. Sure, I love current music but nothing could replace the oldies. Oldie but a Goodie.
