Title: Basic Help
Description: Looking for some basic gaming advice

Resguard - May 9, 2007 01:23 AM (GMT)
I am new to this game, and unfortunatly I have limited Japanese and onyl the Japanese copy of this game.

Is there any faq or place where I can learn the basics. I've read posts about Island names and second scores, but I don't understand most of these things.

So far Im able to roll my Katamari around and beat levels to a degree, but would like to learn more about the islands Im creating, does it make a difference if my Katamari is bigger then next time I finish a stage?
What is the king scoring me on?
What does the king ask me after I finish the level for a second time?

Any help would be greatful... I've searched all over for a basic faq, but have yet to find one around. Thank you for any help you can provide me. :) So far I've already fallin in love with this game, though I don't knwo fully what Im doing yet.

The scoring, I've always thought, is a bit random.

If you look at the scoreboard in the hall of fane, for each level your supposed to roll up a certain type of object. For the turtle, it's supposed to be hard objects. I've noticed though that that is only partially true. The larger the katamari is, that will help too.

Basically each level you need to get a certain size in a certain amount of time with a supposedly certain amount of a certain type object. Phew. But I generally just roll and roll and roll and I usually get 90-100 as far as the score goes.

have you ever played a katamari game at all before? not sure if you mean you are new to katamari psp or katamari in general.

feel free to ask as many q's and we'll all do out best to help you out.

Anytime when you redo a "level" the king asks if you want to replace the existing island with the new one. I think upper choice is "make a new island from this katamari", lower is "keep the previous" ? (Sorry, haven't played mmk for months)

Im new to the whole series of Katamari. The game was on sail and is a huge hit over here, so I thought I'de give it a go, and I'm very happy i did. But I'm still trying to figure out a lot of the choices and what all is on the island, like the ferris wheel and the hot air balloon.

Thanks for telling me about the island choices I kept making a new island and was to scared to try the second option, glad ot know I was picking the right one.

Ive only been able to get 66 on the turtle level, I was looking for hard things, and now Im just rolling like crazy. I guess I still need to get use to these controls.

So as you get more points it looks like the island gets a little bigger as well, is this correct?

What can you do to get high scores if its random? Also if you get the 80 over mode, which has no timer will whatever items you get in that mode help your island get bigger, or is it just for fun?

vix - May 9, 2007 03:51 PM (GMT)
The ferris wheel is the item collection screen. That shows you your item inventory. I believe th ehot air balloon lets you travel around all the islands that you've made.

I believe, it's been a while since I played this, that when you get over 80, you do unlock the eternal version of the levels. That lets you roll for fun without a timer and you can collect items you need and what not. You can't make islands out of that, if I remember correctly but the items do count towards your collection.

Sounds good.

My next question is, do you know where I can find out if my island is complete, such as the names the island gets? As much as I enjoy rolling the little katamari, it can get tiredsome rolling in the same level over and over trying to get that next island size, when i already have the largest one :)

Thanks for answering my questions, Im sure its hard to remember all the information from a game you haven't played in a while.

vix - May 10, 2007 02:13 AM (GMT)
I think someone posted island names here somewhere but the problem is is that the search feature doesn't work on this board yet so you gotta sift through everything. Maybe someone else can help out with this one but I don't think the island names vary too much. I honestly don't remember, it's been at least a year since i put solid effort into MMK. :) Sorry I'm not much help but keep the questions coming.

Resguard - May 10, 2007 06:00 AM (GMT)
No problem. I find it strange that everyone that knows this game loves it, but there is very little info and faqs about it, espeically compared to some not so favorable games.

Do you know if anyone has posted what all is on the ferris wheel. The japanese is a bit much and Im trying to sort out whats items I have for the whole game versus Items that are from a certain level.

Ive been playing the turtle Hard item, level fro a bit now trying to collect all the items there, but Im not sure if Ive gotten them all yet. Im just glad I finally reached over 80 on the score.

Also do you know how to get the medal on top of the girls head in the turtle level. My katamari is either to big and picks up the cellphone walkway, or its to small and I cant get it on top of the girl and around the penguin key chains.????

vix - May 10, 2007 05:28 PM (GMT)
I think the problem with this game is that the way it's set up, it doesn't make it easy to write up a faq for it.

Ferris Wheel is the item inventory grouped up.

Orange = Object
Red = Alphabetical
Purple = Name
Green = Location
Yellow = Size

Name is items that have "names" but they're really just regular items. Like one is a scary cat, the cousins are on it, etc.

Hmm, that medal can be a bit tricky, if it's the one i'm thinking of, i just rolled up the side of the girl and got it that way, it's a little tricky at times but it works eventually.

Resguard - May 14, 2007 02:57 AM (GMT)
Thanks again. Yeah I can see how this game can be tricky. I just want to collect all the items from a given area. I think Ive given up on some areas trying to get a score of 100. My hands start to hurt after a while of mad rolling.

Im still working on the medal. Im either to small to collect it, or to big that I collect the phone ramp and can't get back up on her head.

I have one other question.

In slo-bros faqs on gamefaqs.com he gave the stage name and animal stage to help find the cousins and old items.

But in his first three towns he labels Turtle Eternal as the possable location of those towns. How is that possable?, every time I play the turtle level I am always in the same room, none of the other locations.

vix - May 14, 2007 03:08 AM (GMT)
Hmmm, I'm not sure about that one. slo_bro hasn't been around in a while so I don't know.

That's why I never bothered to make a faq for this game, it's just too confusing as to how it's set up.

Resguard - May 14, 2007 03:20 AM (GMT)
yeah no kidding.

Do you know if there are items that only appear in the Volcano stages and are not able to get in Eternal mode on one of the other stages.

Im not so interested yet in getting 100 point scores as I am to finding every item.... :) this game has no point and yet its the most addicting thing

discostu - May 14, 2007 03:27 AM (GMT)
i havent heard about that, how close are you to getting all the objects? i made a list once i was nearly there and the people here helped me find the rest

with the medal i just persisted with the rolling and eventually got there

vix - May 14, 2007 03:27 AM (GMT)
Hmmm, I don't remember but I wouldn't be surprised if there are a few items for each volcano island level that you cna only get there.

Blazekin93 - May 14, 2007 05:46 PM (GMT)
The best way to get the medal on top of the girls head is to go into Eternal Mode, get as big as you can, and then roll up her and grab the medal. It will take a few tries, but just keep going at it. And for the Turtle level, there is an item in the begginig room, I think it's a push pin, and it gives you a fair amount of points. Just roll them all up, and there is also a paper weight on the desk you start out on, which also gives you a large amount of points. I think you have to be around 20 cm to pick it up. As for the Volcano question, I'm not entirerly sure, but there are probaly some items that can only be gotten in those levels.

Resguard - May 14, 2007 11:03 PM (GMT)
thank you guys for your help. This medal is driving me insane. The girl just wont let me climb up the back of her head, and if I try to go to her legs for a running start either she kicks me in a crazy direction making me have to set myself up again, or the controls are too difficult to align right with speed.

Did anyone else have this much of a problem?, this is my last item needed for me to get 100% items in the turtle stage and man am I really hating this turtle now :)

discostu - May 14, 2007 11:11 PM (GMT)
are you doing it in eternal? firstly make sure you are as big as possible, just get on the back of her and just keep pushing forward, dont give up and hope for the best :D

i'll have a go now

discostu - May 14, 2007 11:26 PM (GMT)
ok it took a few attempts, you can either line up with it and rol forward and keep adjusting so you dont fall off or they way i did it just now was to line up perfectly with itm not too far back but not too close and boost up i was 24.5cm at the time

Resguard - May 15, 2007 12:53 AM (GMT)
thanks Ill give it a go again. I've been trying in Eternal Mode, but never could get up there. I guess playing at around 2am doesnt help with not getting frustrated at not being able to climb up the girls head. I mean how hard can it be to roll up some girls head.

But I do hate her very much, and if I wasn't this super tiny green guy I think I'de have my little guy just kick her a few times.

Once I get this one Item, I get to try and unlock the Eternal Mode on the Canery level, and Im sure that in itself will be fun :)

Also, Im playing the Japanese version of the game, so the names of the islands may be a bit different, but how do you know when you've got the best island name for the Volcano animal stages? I know with the others its getting a King score of over 80, but there is no Kings score on the Volcano levels!

discostu - May 15, 2007 01:15 AM (GMT)
im sure the best islands are listed somewwhere on this site but i'll check the names for you :)

ant-irresistable island-
goriilla-galactic explorer-
chameleon-maniac museum
crane-immortal
camel-jackpot

Resguard - May 15, 2007 04:33 AM (GMT)
do you know what you need to get those names.

For example I heard that you need like 100,000 years or something in items to get the Crane's highest name. What about the others? I can kind of figure out what the main item needed is, but not the amount needed to get a higher name rank.

I hope i get this down soon so I can stop bothering you lovely people.

As frustrating this game is getting fo rme, I ran out and bought We love Katamari just the other day, so I can play the console version, and now Im just as addicted to it. If it wasn't for Kingdom Heart 2: Final Mix......this would be all I was playing

discostu - May 15, 2007 09:19 PM (GMT)
here are my scores hope they help
ant-irresistable island-788 sweets
goriilla-galactic explorer-FIRE!!! 82m27cm
chameleon-maniac museum-40 cleared
crane-immortal-10632 years
camel-jackpot -$65462

Resguard - May 17, 2007 06:14 AM (GMT)
thanks that's really helpful. It gives me a goal I can understand to achieve.

This game is all kinds of crazy, but it's very enjoyable, and addicting. Who would have thought rolling things into a ball would actually be one of the most entertaining games out there.

New question.

There is a lot of the later levels, that after you reach a certain size the stage changes either location or day to night, with objects all changing. Is there any way to prevent this, or a stage where they dont shift, so i can try to find every item. Any imput form you pros would be so very appriciated. Thanks again

vix - May 17, 2007 04:06 PM (GMT)
Unfortunately, no. How the levels appear is pretty much random. But if you do them in eternal mode, I think you restart each section from the puase menu. I'm not positive though.

discostu - May 17, 2007 07:22 PM (GMT)
i didnt find that too inconvenient, it only takes a restart or 2 to get the level you want
