Title: invitation to improve on my single-segment
Description: for Vix, matthew69, Lo7, and anyone else
slo_bro - August 9, 2006 03:23 AM (GMT)
Do you guys know about the just over an hour long video where I go all the way through We Love Katamari? Well, I am inviting anybody to go ahead and try to improve on my video if they want to.
The objective of the video is to get all the way through WLK in as little time as possible. The timing begins when you first take control of the katamari in the tutorial and ends when you roll up the Sun.
I know for sure that matthew69 knows WLK well enough to beat my time by a wide margin, if he took a few tries at it. Heck, if he got a 1:30 in Fireflies that alone would be a thirty second improvement. And my time in ALAP5 was something like 6:30.
You certainly wouldn't have to play the stages in the exact order I did, but my order works well; feel free to use it.
Tutorial
ALAP1
ALAP2
Underwater ALAP
Flowers -- just get 617 flowers and cancel out
Roll Up The Sun - press the button immediately
ALAP3
School ALAP
Room Cleaning
Zoo - get 150 animals and cancel out
Snowman
ALAP4
Race Track ALAP
Campfire Small
Gingerbread House roll up fans at 1m30cm
Paper Cranes - get 600 and cancel out
50-Item Challenge - get any 50 items AFAP
Sumo Small
Cowbear
Fireflies
Saturn Small - reach at least 10cm and press the button
Save The Pandas - collect at least $7 and cancel out
ALAP5
Clouds - collect 50 clouds and cancel out
Roll Up The Sun - collect 25 objects or so and then do it
End Credits
This is just an idea, in case anybody wants to take a crack at this sometime in the future.

this is intriguing...i'll have to see if i can manage a decent time, though i kinda doubt it...
matthew69 - August 9, 2006 03:53 AM (GMT)
Well if vix is in, I'm in! :thumbsup But doesn't the game determine the order of the levels? I can't remember. Or does it give you access to a couple of levels simultaneously?
But . . . I'm not a very graceful player. An hour of me bumping into everything in sight might upset some people.

You probably know this, but I was talking about improving on the "single segment" video I have on Speed Demos Archive. I wasn't talking about any type of tourney.
I hope somebody gives it a shot.
Usually as you play, more than one level opens up at a time. It can be confusing exactly which combination of levels open up which level.
matthew69 - August 9, 2006 02:19 PM (GMT)
Ya, I know it's not a tourney, it's just that it might be more fun if somebody else is "joining me" on this little, er, escapade.
So are you saying that the game always opens up the same levels in the same order? That THAT is confusing? Or does it mix things up differently for you each time?
slo_bro - August 9, 2006 06:29 PM (GMT)
Oh :) I understand, yeah, definitely, maybe even all three of us can work on this simultaneously.
I am almost sure that any time you complete the stages in a given order, the same stages will unlock at the same times. But depending on what order you play the stages the new ones will unlock in different orders, like if you play through in one order stage 4 might open up before Snowman, or vice versa. At least that's the way I remember it :) I didn't actually test it all that much.
Something Arrow and I determined for sure though was that the AFAP versions of stages are not necessary to roll up the Sun, and completing them will not allow you to roll up the Sun any sooner. So this goal only involves playing through the first version of each stage.
Good luck to all that decide to go for this!

Does this count the collect the cousins? Or is it only the main levels, no bonus levels included?
And is it to see who can get past Stage 5 the fastesting including saving the earth and credits roll?
slo_bro - August 11, 2006 12:26 AM (GMT)
It's to see who can roll up the Sun and see the credits the fastest. You don't need to play Save Earth or Collect The Cousins. You only have to play one version of each normal stage (ALAP but not AFAP).
And there is no rule saying that all the stages I listed have to be included! If you could find a way, on a new save file, to roll up the Sun and reach the ending without ever having played ALAP5, then right there you would save a ton of time and almost certainly you'd beat my video.
But Speed Demos Archive does deal in more than one kind of video. They have completionist videos too, like going through every single stage, or even going through every single stage getting super-clears in each. There are a lot more ways this could be done than just the way I did it. If someone recorded a video through all the stages, and it got accepted, then it would go as a separate category on Speed Demos Archive, and they'd keep both videos. Heck, there could even be a video that includes collecting all the cousins; SDA's limit on video length is 7 hours :eek
:) I'm glad people are interested in giving this a try.

Sorry if you already said this but do you add just the time you spend in the levels? The time you spend in the game? From the boot of the ps2?
slo_bro - August 11, 2006 03:31 AM (GMT)
Speed Demos Archive would count every second, in levels and on the select meadow and while loading and while the King is jabbering, from the moment the katamari starts moving in the tutorial until the time you roll up the sun.
I doubt anybody will take me up on this offer, but I am willing to send anybody a DVD copy of my run that we're trying to improve on. (which can be watched on a PS2). PM me if you want one. You'd see parts done well, and you'd see parts that need considerable improvement. And (EEK) you'd see the King roll me up in the ending :crybaby

Since at least one person is actually recording single-segment videos now, I guess I should try my best to avoid a misunderstanding ...
Even though timing is only from the beginning of the tutorial through rolling up the Sun, Speed Demos Archive would want the video to include everything from rolling up the little Registered Trademark thingy to the scene where the King sings to the baby Prince. And unfortunately it is against SDA rules to record any cutscenes, so definitely don't record the scenes from the King's past (though you probably wouldn't anyway since they'd add to your time).
good luck!!
If anybody has questions about anything, you can ask and hopefully I can answer.
edit: :woot I just saw Yoda's name at the bottom of the homepage! I didn't know Yoda came here anymore.
Yoda, if you want to try this too you sure can. Even if you don't actually make a video.
