Title: Crowns and Twins
Description: UPDATE: Now making FAQ. See latest post.

Arrow - March 28, 2006 01:44 AM (GMT)
I recently decided to sit down and try to 100% complete KD and WLK. The only two stages I still need 100% on in KD are Corona Borealis and Gemini.

On Corona, I can get extremely close, consistently getting 105 (out of 107). The fact that I almost always get this many makes me think that it's the same two I'm missing every time. I know about the three in the tree... any other well-hidden ones? It might help to know if I'm getting all of the ones in the upper area of the town before I head down the street. There should be 31 (including the one right before you start rolling down) in the upper area, correct?

For Gemini, I'm not even close. The best I can get is 101 (out of 108)... although I think I was close to getting 102 once. I know about the mermaids, the guys on the little hill to the side of the school yard, and the bears near the cave. Are there any twins that might be disappearing because I get too large? Any other ones I may have missed?

The Prince's Bride - March 28, 2006 03:01 PM (GMT)
Before you roll down to the lower part of the town, there is a crown atop a lion statue; when you climb up the ladder and grab that one, that should make number 32. I've helped someone else with 100% Corona Borealis, here's a link: http://s9.invisionfree.com/Katamari_Damacy...=02&f=2&t=12059 . I really hope that helps you a little. As for Gemini, you're better off on that level than I am, my best is 98 :heh

Arrow - March 28, 2006 08:41 PM (GMT)
Hmmm, that link didn't work for some reason. But it's alright, I managed to get 107 :woot The one on top of the lion was one I had missed... I never would have found that on my own :frusty The other one, I'm not sure... it may have been the one on the mounted deer head. That one seemed unfamiliar when I picked it up. Thanks for the help! :notworthy

Now I just have to worry about those twins... :dead

Someone should make an FAQ with walkthroughs for getting 100% on all of the constellation stages. *not volunteering*

slo_bro - March 29, 2006 01:11 AM (GMT)
I made videos for each stage, :poke :poke Aaron

But walkthroughs explaining every set of twins for example would be a bigger help than just a video.

Arrow - March 29, 2006 08:48 AM (GMT)
Even though I just said that I wouldn't want to be the one to make the constellation walkthroughs, I'm starting to consider it :lol And it would be great if slo's videos were online, because then I could link to them as further help. Of course, I still need to get 100% on Gemini before I can do this ;) Would anyone be willing to help if I did something like this?

EDIT: Out of curiousity, has it ever been determined what the deal is with Cygnus being listed as 71 and Gemini being listed as 109 in the FAQ's? I know vix was basing her's off of Chris's, and I assume beastiecube did the same. I'm inclined to think that this wasn't a difference in the Japanese version, but a typo on Chris's part.

EDIT#2: Managed a 107 on Gemini. So close :frusty

vix - March 30, 2006 12:04 AM (GMT)
about cygnus, i'm also inclined to think it's a typo on the original faq writer's part. since no one has yet to say they got 100% with 71...as for gemini, not sure.

Arrow - March 30, 2006 06:29 AM (GMT)
I don't know about Gemini, since I haven't even managed 108 yet, but I can almost say with 100% certainty that there are not 71 swans in the American version of KD. Make Cygnus is, strangely enough, my favorite level, and I've obtained 70 swans multiple times... never more than that. I think the only question here is whether or not this is a possible version difference, or just a typo. Maybe someone should try emailing Chris about it.

slo_bro - March 30, 2006 06:48 AM (GMT)
Oh, Cygnus is your favorite KD level? *slo_bro's competitive streak sets in* Have you ever gone for the largest diameter you could manage on an attempt when you collect 70 swans? I think that's fun. My best was 24cm1mm. My best strategy is to madly weed the lawn of dandelions in the last 15 seconds after I pick up the final egg.

Arrow - March 30, 2006 09:06 AM (GMT)
My record is 25cm4mm :) I really can't remember what my strategy was when I did it... I think I may have gone back up to the roof to pick up the birds and other various items after I picked all the flowers.

I've made a startling discovery on Gemini. Maybe this is old news but it completely took me by surprise. You can lose constellation items. At first, I didn't think it was possible; I did a specific test where I picked up the first 10 or so sets of twins, and then CnRed into a wall over and over. Only the non-twin items fell off. But just recently in the last few times I've been playing it, I've noticed that if you get stuck somewhere (in such a way where items start madly flying off), you CAN lose twins. And your item count WILL go down if you do. However, any items that fly off will respawn on the level in their normal spot, so you can pick them up again. But of course, that assumes that you know exactly what flew off. I'm starting to think that it's very possible I'm picking up every twin, but that I'm losing one along the way. I frequently find myself getting "stuck" by the gas station, in the entrance to the little park where you start (when I come back after getting large), in the hole of the brick wall by the school yard (to get onto the gas station roof), and sometimes between the wall and the tree that you knock the singer and safe out of. With so many spots where you can get hung up, this already challenging level becomes even more difficult to get 100% on. I think I'm going to start making a list of all the twins to see if I have, in fact, accounted for all of them, or if I'm still missing one.

EDIT: Two things. First, I confirmed another suspicion I had... small constellation items WILL disappear if you get too large. Second, I made my list and all 108 sets of twins are accounted for, so it's just a matter of making it to the end without losing anything. There was one set of twins that I found while making the list that I hadn't previously noticed counted as twins... in the row of sunflowers on the island in the middle of the pond, two of the flowers are twins. I usually picked these up anyway, but it's possible I missed them on previous attemps. I'm too tired tonight, but tomorrow I'm going to make some serious attempts at hitting 100%, and then I'll see about making this FAQ :)

slo_bro - March 30, 2006 10:51 AM (GMT)
A list of all the twins would be a very good idea. Gemini is an interesting and challenging enough stage to warrant it. If you don't make a list I might try to within the next couple days.

The only times I know of when constellation objects fall off the katamari are at the beginning of the stage when there isn't much else to fall off, or if you really really really lose a lot of stuff by having your katamari stuck for a long time. It sounds like the latter may be happening :( so you may be dropping twins. How much more frustrating would the constellation stages be without the brilliant idea the designers had of making it very hard to lose constellation objects, though?!

They haven't recieved any entries, but Twin Galaxies lists as one of its world record categories the greatest amount of time left when you reach 100% in the constellation stages. I bet your Cygnus would be hard to beat.

Arrow - March 30, 2006 10:57 AM (GMT)
Tom, I edited my last post about the same time you posted, make sure you read my edit. I have a complete list now. As far as I've been able to tell, you cannot lose constellation items from collisions, only from getting stuck. And I think that Gemini is an extraordinarily easy level to get stuck on once you're as large as you need to be to pick up the kids rolling the balls (over 4 meters? I don't usually pay attention to my diameter). As far as Cygnus goes, I don't know about that :heh I've hit 70 a few times, but I doubt I ever did it with more than 20 seconds left. I usually go fairly slowly to make sure I pick up every egg. When I play for diameter, I don't worry about trying to get 100%; I skip a lot of eggs.

slo_bro - March 30, 2006 11:07 AM (GMT)
Oh :crybaby I thought you meant you had reached 25cm4mm when you collected all the eggs. What my 24cm1mm was was my biggest on an attempt when I do collect all the eggs. :crybaby And I was REALLY impressed for a minute there. Still, all eggs or not, your biggest is far larger than I've ever been in that stage.

Nice, you already made a list of all the twins. In reality I probably don't know some of the twin pairs even though I've gotten 100%. For example, at one point I reenter the park and just pick lots and lots of stuff up not knowing what is twins and what isn't.

One option would be to send your list of 108 twins pairs to Vix and she could add them to the existing FAQ, but I think that stage would warrant its own dedicated FAQ if you want to write one.

Yeah, I'm leaning more towards the latter. Walkthroughs for the constellation stages would be pretty long, and I could easily fill up a full FAQ just with that information. I was thinking of also having a section for each level detailing specific constellation items that are commonly missed, so people that are only missing one or two items can check it without having to read the whole walkthrough. The FAQ will cover all six item collection stages (Cancer, Cygnus, Virgo, Corona, Gemini, Pisces).

Arrow - April 2, 2006 12:04 AM (GMT)
Cygnus update: I gave it another shot, and managed a 25cm9mm! What's funny is that there were a few items I forgot about that I know would have easily pushed me above 26cm. I may try it again...

Gemini update: I finally managed 100% and I'm working on my FAQ now. Here is an example of how the entries will currently appear:

*Make Gemini
*Number of Objects Required: 108 twins
*Time Limit: 10 minutes
*Difficulty: 5
*Summary: 108 may not seem like such a large number compared to Virgo, but when you remember
that each twin consists of two items, the number you must collect here is actually a
staggering 216 items! Fortunately, most of the twins are located right next to each other.
But many of them are not, or are very difficult to recognize as twins. There are many
challenges on this stage beyond simply finding all the twins. Many of the twins are living,
so you'll have to be careful about not giving them time to run away if you knock them over.
The largest set of twins, the boys rolling the balls in the school yard, require you to be
4m4cm to roll up, so you need to reach this size as quickly as possible. However, some of
the twins are small and will disappear if you get too large before picking them up.
Additionally, it is extremely easy to get stuck around the town once you get large, which
can cause you to lose twins you already picked up. 10 minutes may seem like a lot of time,
but you'll burn through it quickly with all the traveling you have to do around the stage.
You will probably not be able to finish in time the first few attempts, even following my
walkthrough. Only through practice and very refined routes will you be able to make it.
Good luck.
*Hard to Find Items:
Mermen and Mermaids - Commonly overlooked, there are two islands out in the ocean that you
must visit... one with two mermen, another with two mermaids.
Guitar player and Safe - You'll easily find one of the Guitar players in the streets of the
town, and one of the safes near the house by the school yard. But their partners are well
hidden... in the tree right next to the first safe. Bump into it a few times to knock down
their partners.
School signs - Located on the school yard's brick wall (the one that the gate is sliding
back and forth against) are six signs. Four of them are twin pairs.
*Walkthrough: Start by rolling to your right to pick up twin frogs (1). Begin rolling
forward from where you started, picking up the pair of boots (2) and baseball bats (3).
Make a circle around the tree in front of you, grabbing the green squash twins (4), the
pair of orange squash (5), and the trophies (6). The orange and green squash pair are not
twins, but you should pick them up anyway so you'll be large enough to pick up the nearby
bulldog. Do not worry if the dog's helmet falls off - it's not a twin. To the bulldog's
right are six pairs of bowling pins (7-12). On the other side of the sidewalk you'll find
the bulldog's partner (13). Continue past him to find two pairs of pink and green balloons
(14-15). Next you'll find a large number of telephones scattered around a light pole, as
well as two gongs. The gongs are twins, so pick them up (16). Fall off the ledge by the
lamp post and you should land very close to a pair of pillows (17). In the nearby corner by
the wall are two blue crabs (18). In front of the shop you're next to are a pair of welcome
mats (19). Now it's time to head towards the middle. First, face the middle and look
slightly to the left. You should see a pair of cabbage on the sidewalk (20). Grab them,
being careful around the various pedestrians, and then roll into the very center of the
park. Go around in a circle, picking up the four clock numbers (21-22). Finish up by
getting the clock's hands (23). Move back out to the sidewalk, and follow it around to find
two pairs of sunflowers (24-25), twin shopping bags (26), and a pair of cats (27),
chickens (28), and penguins (29) wandering around. Near the place where you started is a
pair of green crabs (30) and another set of orange squash (31). Now roll back up into the
place you started to grab the twin bonsai trees (32) and the young girls (33). It's time to
move on to the next area. Follow the path that leads to the stairs down to the grassy area.
There are twin crows in the gate (34), but they can be difficult to pick up unless you're
very quick. I find it easier to wait until you pick up some of the pairs in the grass area,
and then roll back up the stairs to get them from that direction. At the bottom of the
stairs are two bars (35). In this grass area are numerous twins that you can pick up in any
order you choose: upside down pineapples (36), young boys (37), and sheep (38). Near the
edge of the "forest" are twin peaches (39). Continue into the forest to find two men
wandering around (40), but be careful because one of them will probably be knocked down.
Now roll to the nearby cave to find twin bear cubs (41). Make your way back to the grassy
area. Follow the fence around the pond to find two pairs of benches (42-43). Near the
second pair of benches is a set of pink inner tubes (44) and tricycles (45). Turn towards
the beach and you should see a man using binoculars... pick both of them up. Continue to
the beack and grab the green inner tubes (46) and the blindfolded kids (47). Now head back
to the pond. You can get some of the animals following the rolling guys if you want, but I
like to wait until I'm larger so the rolling guys don't bump me. Head into the pond to the
house on the island in the middle. Being careful to avoid the sea turtles, pick up the twin
tuna (48), otters (49), and inner tube kids (50) swimming around. Then pick up all of the
sunflowers on the island - two of them are twins (51) - and the propane tanks behind the
house (52). Now it's time to roll up the hill into the main town area. There are a large
number of twins around town, and they can be picked up in whatever order is convenient
(size permitting). I'm going to go ahead and list everything found around town at once, but
I usually save some of these twins for when I return later. Roughly from smallest to
largest: at the top of the hill when you first arrive from the pond, across the street are
a pair of campfires (53), a pair of snowmen to the left (54), and a pair of mailboxes to
right (55). Right past that, in the house's front yard are twin lanterns (56). Across the
street you will find the remaining binoculars and man (57-58). Next to the farm, you will
find two pairs of melons (59-60), a pair of TVs (61), and twin scarecrows (62). By the gas
station and near the bicycles (which are not twins) are a pair of manhole covers (63). Up
the hill in the corner are a pair of fenced in cows (64) and dragon guys (65)... it's
difficult to roll into the fenced area while you're small. Down the town's central street
are twin miniature statues (66) standing next to a guitar guy, whom you should also pick
up. On the street next to the mushrooms are a pair of trashcans (67), toy dispensers (68),
and large pink signs (69). You may have also noticed the police men shooting at you (70).
Wandering around the town in various areas are pairs of small women (71), larger women
(72), business men (73), motorcycle riders (the back two motorcycles) (74), and two guys
sitting on the back of a truck (75). At the top of the pond hill to the left are two guys
hanging from a tunnel looking indent (76). Finally, amidst the mushrooms are two
skateboarders (77) and a clown on a ball. These guys are very difficult to catch... try to
either anticipate their path when they run from you, or quickly catch them when they
hesitate after spotting you. Out of everything in the twon, the items I most recommend
picking up during your first visit are the melons by the farm (so they don't disappear when
you get larger) and the guys by the mushrooms, because it's even harder to catch them when
you're too large to fit between the mushrooms. After you've made your first path through
the town, fall down off the ledge by the mushrooms. On the waterfront sidewalk is a rolling
duo. Make your way back to the grassy area's pond to find the other rolling duo (78).
Following the rolling guys are two pairs of cows (79-80) and two pairs of chickens (81-82).
Get the sea turtles now (83) and the two guys spinning around the lamp post (84). The twin
sumo wrestlers should be nearby (85). Hopefully you have reached this point without getting
too large, because now you have to go back through the gate to the area you started in. The
doors of the gate itself are twins (86). The other items in the park you should pick up are
the blue vending machines in the middle (87), the men in bunny suits (88), the rocking
horses (89), the sitting man (on one of the rocking horses), and the other clown on a ball
(90). It's best to exit the park by going over the wall, rather than trying to fit through
the gate again. Return to the beach to pick up the two watermelons (91) and the lifeguard,
who is sitting guy number two (92). Roll out into the ocean to find two small islands, one
with mermaids on it (93) and one with mermen (94). Make your way back to the town, and roll
up any of the remaining pairs I mentioned earlier that you missed the first time through.
Once you've collected them all, head to the base of the ramp leading up to the school yard.
At the very bottom, at the corner where the mushrooms are, there are two posts with mirrors
on top (95). Roll up the ramp and get the guys on stilts (96) and the burglars on the
house's roof (97). Right next to the house with the burglars is a flagpost with two blue
flags on it (98). You can get these either by rolling quickly off the top off the roof into
them, or by picking up the flag pole itself if you're large enough. If you use the latter
method, be careful because the pole will make you very lopsided and much more prone to
getting stuck. Head up into the school yard. You will notice two students amidst the mob
that are taller than the others... they're twins (99). So are the boys rolling balls (100)
and the statues of the principal on the dias between the trees (101). Now roll through the
gap in the brick wall onto the roof of the gas station. Be careful - if you're too large,
you can easily get stuck in the gap. On the roof are a pair of gold fish statues (102) and
guys doing handstands (103). On the wall with the gap are six signs, four of which are
twins (104-105). These can be very difficult to pick up... I recommend carefully rolling up
the soccer goal, stopping at the top of the wall, and then slowly rolling back and forth to
get them. If you have time, you can also just roll straight up and over the wall, picking
them up one or two at a time. Once you have them, head back into the school yard. Near the
exercise bars is a small shed against the brick wall. Roll up onto this shed and over the
wall, into a small area with lots of kids running around. Two of them are twins (106).
Finally, roll down from this area to the house with all the sheep around it. There is a
safe next to the house you need to pick up. Bump into the nearby tree to cause the other
safe (107) and the remaining guitar guy (108) to fall down. Be extremely careful not to get
stuck between the tree and the wall! As soon as you hit 108, you probably won't have much
time left, but even if you do I recommend sitting tight until time expires so you don't
risk getting stuck and losing twins. If you made it, congratulations, you just finished the
most difficult constellation stage in Katamari Damacy with 100%!

I hope the format isn't too screwy... I wrote it the way it needs to be for gamefaqs. The difficulty ranking is going to be a number from 1-5... if you'd like to post your own opinions about the stages relative difficulty, feel free to check out my poll, here. If you have any suggestions for my walkthrough, or your own ideas for the walkthrough of the other levels, post them here.

I am very curious, how's the FAQ coming?

Arrow - April 16, 2006 09:05 AM (GMT)
To be honest, I haven't worked on it much lately. I'm still doing it, I've just been sidetracked with other things. I'm really not looking forward to writing the Virgo and Pisces walkthroughs :frusty :doh

Did you find my Gemini walkthrough to be easy enough to understand?

slo_bro - April 16, 2006 06:43 PM (GMT)
I liked reading through the walkthrough; I could picture each area as I read so I think it's well-written. As would be expected each person is a little different so I do it quite a bit differently; the biggest difference is that I like to wait on getting the clock hands until I come back much larger because they make me lopsided. But I like the walkthrough.

Space_Cat - October 3, 2006 11:06 AM (GMT)
Fantastic and very clear guide. Many thanks, because I just managed to improve my score from 98 all the way to 108 in just a few turns. :cool
