Title: The meaning of "Gay"
Description: Teenagers nowadays...

Gay -
Noun.
A homosexual, especially male.
Adjective.
Showing or characterized by cheerfulness and lighthearted excitement; merry.
Bright or lively, especially in color: a gay, sunny room.
Imagine you are in a mall, popular hangout for teenagers, right now. You go the the foodcourt, find a table, and sit down. You are by yourself. You are waiting for your food to come, and you got nothing to do. Because of the fact you're bored, you start listening to others' conversations. "Oh, that is so gay!" What is your reaction?
Gay is a popular word that a lot of teenagers use. Gay means stupid and weird. The expression "gay" orginally means happy and joyful. In between times, the meaning of "gay" changed into homosexuality. Today, the word has a new meaning. Apparently, the meaning is weird or stupid.
In my opinion, I think it's annoying. A lot of teenagers today say that. "Gay" as in stupid is not even close to the meaning of "gay" as in homosexuality. It might offend people. I mean, if someone's gay, and you say it in front of their face "oh, that's gay", wouldn't they be offened? Why can't people just stick with the old meaning? Yes, I know. No one goes around saying "Hehe, I am gay[happy] today!" But can't people at least use "gay" as in homosexuality?

No, because, sadly enough, most of us teens, nowadays, are really immature. They don't realize that words hurt people. Or, they just don't care. It is really sad, how numb Teens are. Another thing I don't like about the Teens around me is the fact that they are so ignorant. They don't realize how vunerable they are, and how importent knowledge is.
One such example of this, is what they said they wanted to be in the school yearbook. Most of them want to be supermodels and professional sports players. I may sound cruel here, but they have to understand, there is a unlikely chance they are going to be like these things. They should have a more realistic dreams. Or maybe I'm being just a little too harsh.

It is inconisiderate. But tlike so many other words the meaning get changed and fliped around.Look at the word "Pimp" used to a word to describe a person who controls a prostitute and take their money in exchange of pertection. Now the word "Pimp" mean fly, good with ladies/men,something that looks good.Same as the word "Dope","Fly","Freash".Even the word "B***h is used as a greating term in some places.Like most things "Gay" got turned into a "Fad".While there are some real homosexual people out there that actually choose to live that lifestyle while people make light of it.

I hate it when people use the term ''gay'' as a insult it pisses me off, I have one bi freind and a gay freind and I dont think I have any lesbian freinds....but anyway it really makes me mad because their insulting them everytime they use it as a insult to someone else.

Ah, I knew Dark General and Xorital would post here. [[You two post a lot in the this part of the forum]]
Like you all said, words can hurt people. Name calling. It really is offensice to homosexuals. I mean, how often do you hear a homosexual saying "Oh, that's so gay"?
A lot of times, words change their meanings overtimes. How? I have no idea. However, we all accept the new meaning and throw away the old, just like the words like Dark General mentioned.

Yeah a lot of words loose thier first meaning over time. Some for the better others for the worst. The Lesbian girls that i know don't really care about the word they just accept it.The Gay guys i can't speak for i don't hang out with them, know them,or speak to them so i can't really say.But from T.V and some radio clips they homosexual guys don't particularly like the word being thrown around. Also in the world we live in today Gay is accepted and is more open then ever before. It used to be if you were gay you would be an outcast but now it's almost like it's the norm now.No one knows how words meaning changes,it's like knowing why something becomes so popular it's mystery.
Yeah i post alot in every Forum i'm in just about. And the touche subjects don't rattle me and i like to vioce my opionion.

Not all of them, believe me.
And yes those kinds of careers seem to be so out of reach because you're right, they actually are. It is extremely hard to grow up to be a professional sport player or super model. But the most of them who are those things today were achieving these dreams when they were teenagers themselves.
Anyway yes I hear it a lot at my school too, that something is so "gay" as in stupid. I have thought about what it would be like in a gay person's position and heard someone say that. It made me feel terrible, and so it was why I never used that term to mean stupid or weird. It immediately made me think, "so someone like me could be stupid and weird too?" But it's not true.
I'm friends with a few gay people and they're really awesome friends.
Yeah, a lot of teenagers are ignorant and stuff like that. Isn't that because of others' influences aroudn those teenagers as well? I mean they didn't just gain that trait over night. But then again, it seems like everything these days has a more negative influence than a positive one.
Krazydog - April 22, 2006 06:44 PM (GMT)
Because we are ignorant teens who have a tendency to not think of others. Or they're to use to saying it that it becomes second nature.

(yep mature conversations are my favorite lol)
Yes you are correct, most teens thees days are extreamly ignorant, not only with the word gay but with alot of things, one of my freinds is extreamly ignorant always thinks shes right, like when I said something was ironic, she told me I didnt know what the ment XD, and she kept being ignorant about the meaning saying theirs one meaning for the word (and as you know theirs like 4 other meanings) but anywho, sorry for getting off topic....

A friend of mine is gay, so it's an instinct to correct people when they say "Oh, that's gay."
It's a pet peeve of mine.
Xorital - April 23, 2006 08:28 PM (GMT)

Monchhichi - April 24, 2006 12:17 AM (GMT)
