Title: Poking Around
Description: AW

Archipluvian - May 24, 2008 01:25 AM (GMT)
It was an overcast day, low clouds rolling over the horizon and spreading ominously over the sky with a big fat promise of rain. Not that rain would make much of a difference to the ambience of the broken down town that Archipluvian was in. The big grey wolf was mooching down the street, nose to the ground as she idly followed scent trails. Every now and then her tail would wave from side to side for no apparent reason. Her gaze flicked along the street in front of her, pausing on the shadowed broken doorways and the tumbled walls, skipping to the places where little warm bundles of food might be living. Her ears twitched. She padded along, happy to be a bit alone today, the fat half of a deer carcase she'd found filling her belly enough to give her a little free time to poke around. She snuffed at some grass, bit it off delicately and then not so delicately chewed the awkward stuff into submission before swallowing. Hmm.

Hmm! She lifted her head suddenly, ears perked again. Was someone near her? She wasn't sure. Her grey eyes surveyed the streets around her.

OOC: Decided a while ago when you mentioned this thread that I’d join. Just never got around to actually posting until now. Sorry. :)

He had only mentioned the place once in passing, but the thought of a place made of deteriorating stone and metal intrigued her. It made no sense why anyone would want to create such a place filled with gloom, steel and concrete. Nature was beginning to try and regain what it had lost to these creatures - What did Haze call them? Humans? - but the battle seemed like a hard one. There didn’t seem to be any place for the plants clinging to the sides of the tall structures to get their water; how could there be anything to provoke life underneath this hard, impenetrable earth? It was tough on her paws compared to the dirt of the land, and many more times harder than the snow had been. A quick glance skyward gave her a bit of hope in this department at least. The clouds looked promising for the plants that lived here, and Snow actually found herself rooting for the green things instead of against them like she had in the forest. Maybe taking everything in small doses did that, since that forest had been obnoxiously green.

<p>As her pale yellow eyes set themselves upon the corner ahead, she decided then and there to venture left. She had already been down that street on the right side and wound her way back somewhere near the middle, and going back over an area didn’t really appeal much to her. If anything, the quiet was nice, welcome even, despite the current state of the place. What could it all have looked like in its day? Where all the structures tall, or short like some of the standing ones? Could there be many traces of the creatures that lived here at one time amongst the rubble? And on top of that, did any living thing frequent this place?

<p>Her thoughts were still well along this track when she finally reached the corner, strolling along beside the broken down building as she followed its edge and turned, catching sight of another creature strolling the same street. I suppose this answers my question, Snow mused to herself, blank expression hiding a bit of surprise and curiosity as she paused beside the building. What other kind of soul wandered such vacant lanes with their haunted structures threatening to tumble around you? Well, who ever this was had a sense of adventure, that much had to be true. They were an odd sight for Snow, though she had come to see many strange beings since arriving, but never in this way. The six-legged wolf, since it most resembled a wolf, was colored almost to match the scenery, the gray of its coat seeming to fit with the clouds and the buildings. This must mean I stand out, Snow thought, resisting a glance at herself. She guessed by the attentive way the wolf had looked up that she had heard her before she had seen her, so there seemed no sense in turning back around the corner like she had never been there. Trying for a conversational tone while her face remained blank, Snow asked, ”Strange place, isn’t it?”

((No worries! ^__^))

Archipluvian glanced away just as Snow rounded the corner. When she glanced back a moment later the white wolf was standing there, and she twitched with surprise. She'd been expecting a deer, or a rabbit, or perhaps her companion come back to speak to her or chivvy her along. But it was a strange wolf staring back at her. She drew herself up, squaring her stance and bristling a little. Her eyes ran over Snow and then searched for other wolves behind her.

"Yeah, it is." She replied in a friendly voice. Awkward, standing and making conversation when all you wanted to know was if the other wolf was a danger. "It's the straight lines that do my head in."

She wasn't sure just what particular kind of reaction she had planned on getting, but it didn't take her much by surprise the fact the wolf seemed to immediately shift onto the defensive. Snow herself thought it unnerving at times to suddenly find yourself in the company of a stranger, but with her travels and life being so closed off from the world, her knowledge of threats and the like were limited, those thoughts usually came in later, after she realized who ever was around her wasn't necessarily her 'friend.' It had yet to happen here, but just because the wolves here were different in appearance like herself didn't mean they were similar to her. As she watched the wolf bring herself up, adding to her larger size, it crossed Snow's mind late as usual that she might have met a threat to her life. Instead of letting the thought take root in her mind, she cast it aside, not willing to let defensive thoughts ruin the gloomy, dismal day.

<p>Listening to the wolf speak, it was hard not to notice the way her words didn't exactly match with her posture. Her tone had been closer to the one she had used herself, friendly and conversational, though the way she kept glancing past where Snow stood gave her the idea she wasn't exactly comfortable with her being there. Maybe it would be better if she turned around and walked off? No, that would be rude, and she was still new to the area. She didn't want anyone getting the wrong idea about her before a meeting. At least she wasn't all bright smiles and sunshine rays. Her company would probably be tolerable if she would be able to ditch the defensiveness.

<p>The two-toned wolf, after a little internal debate, began to move along the edge of the building again, her steps relaxed and slow. She figured if the wolf saw that she wasn't tensed like she was ready to fight that they might be able to talk freely, and there was a question she was hoping to get an answer for. Her search for open ground, without the nuisance of the greenery, was still fruitless, and it seemed about time she got a second opinion. Haze at least would be glad of it, though he probably had a better eye over things than anyone. "True. Lots of cutting straight edges and sharp angles here," Snow commented, lowering her nose to the ground to give it a few experimental sniffs. Smelled as strange as it looked. Pausing for a second, she lifted her head and directed her blank gaze towards the gray wolf, her tan tail giving a gentle flick as her head tilted slightly on its side. "I don't understand how these creatures could have lived. I haven't seen any water, and there's no prey here for food," she stated, wondering perhaps if these creatures somehow lived off of the hard materials their world was made of instead of off living things like her kind did.

The grey wolf moved slowly as Snow moved, stepping around in a casual arc so she stayed facing the stranger. Her spare legs swayed with the sideways movement. Her fur smoothed down and her posture lowered in response to the other's display of non-aggression. Her eyes were still watchful, though, her attention focused on the pale wolf's actions. She halted when Snow did.
"They just always had it - food and water. They were the providers, the gods, that's what the dogs say. I think it was magic."

It pleased her to see the other wolf let go of a bit of her distrustful air, though by the way she kept the two-toned female within her line of sight told her she wasn't going to just drop it all at once. Snow settled for getting what she did at the moment, deciding she had gone about things the right way if she was getting the expected results already. The curious body of the wolf drew Snow's eyes to the extra limbs dangling from her sides, watching the way they moved with her steps. They didn't seem to have any mobility themselves, just the effects of her whole body's movements, and she couldn't help wondering if the gray wolf found them a nuisance or not though she felt it far too rude to even bring up.

<p>The wolf's answer brought a spark in her otherwise blank expression, her eyes taking on most of it. "Hmm, magic," she stated, repeating the gray one's words curiously. That was a fun thought. And she was getting some answers to her questions as well. What these creatures wanted was always there just waiting for them to say the word. If only it was that easy in their lives. "Sounds awfully nice. Wonder why they had to screw things up," she mused aloud, lifting her head to send her vacant stare up the side of the building next to her, only getting so far with the top already caved in. It was probably for the better, though.

<p>"Oh," Snow muttered, blinking her pale eyes with a bit of surprise. Introductions, that was right. "Sorry for not saying it sooner. My name is Snow." The white and tan wolf gave a polite bow of her upper body where she stood, using her friendly voice again as she had addressed the other. Whether she got a name back from the gray wolf was her own choice, and she decided it wouldn't matter much either way. "This is my first time coming in here," she stated, picking up her slow pace again as she began to move along the side of the buildings once more, her gaze traveling over the deteriorated structures on her left.

"Archipluvian," the grey wolf supplied. She shifted her weight a little as if she was about to bow also, but then she didn't actually bend her legs. "I forgive you."
Now that, that was said with a definate touch of humour bubbling up past the caution. She picked up a walk as well, keeping pace with Snow from a short distance away. Her tongue - black as coal - flicked out of her mouth to lick her muzzle and leave the teeth that poked out of it shining wet. "Do you live here? Is there a pack?"

She was grateful the gray wolf had seen it fit to give her a name to call her by, even if she still wasn't sure how long she would be there walking and talking with her. The shift in her body had Snow's eyes crinkling slightly around the edges, amused by her tone and the fact she looked as if she might have returned the bow but thought differently before she really made a move to do so. At least she could tell the wolf had a sense of humor, that alone was a plus if anything at all.

<p>Her pale gold eyes shifted to the side to catch the disfigured wolf beginning to walk, matching paces with her though she still kept a decent distance between them both. The sight of her black tongue sliding out of her muzzle to wet her teeth, not all of which were inside her mouth, was a bit unsettling, but Snow made a point not to comment. That would be rude, she reminded herself, and now didn't seem the time for that.

<p>Her ears gave an attentive flick atop her head, and she shook her head no to the first question. "I've yet to find a pack, to be honest. I do live here - not here as in this crumbling, deserted place, but in the general area. I'm looking for a pack to join, though. Can I ask the same of you?" Snow questioned, her yellow gaze shifting to see the wolf out of the corner of her eyes.

"Oh." Archipluvian's gait faltered and she paused, one foot hovering briefly in the air as she looked at the other. That changed things. "I'm the same," she said as she continued walking, the rough dry stone crumbling and rasping under her pads. Her pace was slower now, and her tail hung casually down by her hocks, just twitching a little restlessly now and then. "Just looking for wolves to hunt with," she added with a speculative sideways look at Snow.
